Book Description
The Oratorio in the classical Era is the third volume of Howard Smither's monumental History of the Oratorio, continuing his synthesis and critical appraisal of the oratorio. His comprehensive study surpasses in scope and treatment all previous works on the subject. A fourth and final volume, on the oratorio in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is forthcoming. In this volume Smither discusses the Italian oratorio from the 1720s to the early nineteenth century and oratorios from other parts of Europe from the 1750s to the nineteenth century. Drawing on works that represent various types, languages, and geographical areas, Smither treats the general characteristics of oratorio libretto and music and analyzes twenty-two oratorios from Italy, England, Germany, France, and Russia. He synthesizes the results of specialized studies and contributes new material based on firsthand study of eighteenth-century music manuscripts and printed librettos. Emphasizing the large number of social contexts within which oratorios were heard, Smither discussed examples in Italy such as the Congregation of the Oratory, lay contrafraternities, and educational institutions. He examines oratorio performances in German courts, London theaters and English provincial festivals, and the Parisian Concert spirituel. Though the volume concentrates primarily on eighteenth-century oratorio from the early to the late Classical styles, Smither includes such transitional works as the oratorios of Jean-Francios le Seur in Paris and Stepan Anikievich Degtiarev in Moscow. A History of the Oratorio is the first full-length history of the genre since Arnold Schering's 1911 study. In addition to synthesizing current thought about the oratorio, this volume contributes new information on relationships between oratorio librettos and contemporary literary and religious thought, and on the musical differences among oratorios from different geographical-cultural regions. Book Description
The Folly of the Cross is the fourth book in Richard Viladesau's series examining the aesthetics and theology of the cross through Christian history. Previous volumes have brought the story up through the Baroque era. This new book examines the reception of the message of the cross from the European Enlightenment to the turn of the twentieth century. The opening chapters set the stage in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical eras, describing the changing intellectual and cultural paradigms of the time. Viladesau examines the theology of the cross in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the aesthetic mediation of the cross in music and the visual arts. He shows how in the post-Enlightenment era the aesthetic treatment of the cross widely replaced the dogmatic treatment, and how this thought was translated into popular spirituality, piety, and devotion. The Folly of the Cross shows how classical theology responded to the critiques of modern science, history, Biblical scholarship, and philosophy, and how both classical and modern theology served as the occasions for new forms of representation of Christ's passion in the arts and music.

Book Description
During the second half of the eighteenth century a new type of Passion oratorio with roots in the Empfindsamerkeit literary movement gained popularity in Germany. In this style, dramatic narrative was replaced with a lyric and contemplative text. Rather than unfolding the events of the biblical drama, the librettist assumed the listener’s familiarity with the story and concentrated instead on the expression of emotions evoked by the narrative. Details of this style are described in an essay published in Johann Georg Sulzer’s Allgemeine Theorie der schönen Künste (Leipzig, 1771–74). As a model, Sulzer cites Karl Wilhelm Ramler’s libretto for Der Tod Jesu (1754), a text that is perhaps best known today through Carl Heinrich Graun’s 1755 setting. In the decades that followed, several Passion oratorios appeared in Germany that were influenced to some degree by Der Tod Jesu. Within this group, Rosetti’s Der sterbende Jesus, completed in March 1785 and performed on Good Friday of that year, won special approval among the audiences of southern Germany. The numerous printed and manuscript copies preserved today in archives and collections throughout Europe attest to its enormous contemporary appeal. In addition to the complete work, individual movements were performed outside the context of the oratorio, keyboard arrangements were made, and portions of the work were freely adapted into parodies. Even Mozart, a musician of especially discriminating taste, included a copy of Rosetti’s oratorio in his personal library. This edition, based on the manuscript parts used in the work’s first performance, presents Der sterbende Jesus for the first time in a modern edition.
