Book Description
Jordan algebras have found interesting applications in seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics such as operator theory, the foundations of quantum mechanics, complex analysis in finite and infinite dimensions, and harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces. This book describes some relevant results and puts them in a general framework.

Book Description
Arising out of the need for Quantum Mechanics (QM) to be part of the common education of mathematics students, this book formulates the mathematical structure of QM in terms of the C*-algebra of observables, which is argued on the basis of the operational definition of measurements and the duality between states and observables.

Book Description
This monograph brings together my work in mathematical statistics as I have viewed it through the lens of Jordan algebras. Three technical domains are to be seen: applications to random quadratic forms (sums of squares), the investigation of algebraic simplifications of maxi mum likelihood estimation of patterned covariance matrices, and a more wide open mathematical exploration of the algebraic arena from which I have drawn the results used in the statistical problems just mentioned. Chapters 1, 2, and 4 present the statistical outcomes I have developed using the algebraic results that appear, for the most part, in Chapter 3. As a less daunting, yet quite efficient, point of entry into this material, one avoiding most of the abstract algebraic issues, the reader may use the first half of Chapter 4. Here I present a streamlined, but still fully rigorous, definition of a Jordan algebra (as it is used in that chapter) and its essential properties. These facts are then immediately applied to simplifying the M:-step of the EM algorithm for multivariate normal covariance matrix estimation, in the presence of linear constraints, and data missing completely at random. The results presented essentially resolve a practical statistical quest begun by Rubin and Szatrowski [1982], and continued, sometimes implicitly, by many others. After this, one could then return to Chapters 1 and 2 to see how I have attempted to generalize the work of Cochran, Rao, Mitra, and others, on important and useful properties of sums of squares.

Book Description
This book presents the expanded notes from ten lectures given by the author at the NSF/CBMS conference held at California State University (Bakersfield). The author describes what he calls single orbit dynamics, which is an approach to the analysis of dynamical systems via the study of single orbits, rather than the study of a system as a whole. He presents single orbit interpretations of several areas of topological dynamics and ergodic theory and some new applications of dynamics to graph theory. In the concluding lectures, single orbit approaches to generalizations of the Shannon-Breiman-McMillan theorem and related problems of compression and universal coding are presented. Complete proofs and illuminating discussions are included and references for further study are given. Some of the material appears here for the first time in print.

Book Description
This book is based on a set of lectures presented by the author at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference, Applications of Operator Algebras to Knot Theory and Mathematical Physics, held at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1988. The audience consisted of low-dimensional topologists and operator algebraists, so the speaker attempted to make the material comprehensible to both groups. He provides an extensive introduction to the theory of von Neumann algebras and to knot theory and braid groups. The presentation follows the historical development of the theory of subfactors and the ensuing applications to knot theory, including full proofs of some of the major results. The author treats in detail the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials, introduces statistical mechanical methods on knot diagrams, and attempts an analogy with conformal field theory. Written by one of the foremost mathematicians of the day, this book will give readers an appreciation of the unexpected interconnections between different parts of mathematics and physics.

Book Description
"Starting only with a basic knowledge of graduate real analysis and Fourier analysis, the text first presents basic nonlinear tools such as the bootstrap method and perturbation theory in the simpler context of nonlinear ODE, then introduces the harmonic analysis and geometric tools used to control linear dispersive PDE. These methods are then combined to study four model nonlinear dispersive equations. Through extensive exercises, diagrams, and informal discussion, the book gives a rigorous theoretical treatment of the material, the real-world intuition and heuristics that underlie the subject, as well as mentioning connections with other areas of PDE, harmonic analysis, and dynamical systems.".
