According to the Joint Strike Fighter Single Acquisition Management Plan, a principal objective of the current concept demonstration phase is to demonstrate to a low level of technical risk those critical technologies, processes, and system characteristics necessary to produce an affordable family of strike aircraft that meets all participants' needs before entering engineering and manufacturing development. The F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), is the Department of Defense's most costly and ambitious aircraft acquisition, seeking to simultaneously develop and field three aircraft variants for the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and eight international partners.
