Book Description
Jesus in Latin America
Author: Jon Sobrino
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1592449794
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 207
Book Description
Jon Sobrino's qualifications as a theologian and the importance of his theological work are universally acknowledged, but the orthodoxy of his work and the orthopraxis of the activity it sets in motion are controversial. Sobrino responds to critics in this collection of articles on the theme of Jesus of Nazareth and his relevance to Christian life and faith in Latin America. The christology Sobrino argues for affirms belief in the divinity of Jesus and the centrality of Jesus' relationship with the poor and oppressed. It is, as Juan Alfaro says in the Foreword, a christology springing from Christian faith as lived in the historical situation of the Latin American people.

From Conquest to Struggle
Author: David B. Batstone
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 9780791404218
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
This book goes to the very heart of the passionate debate over the true character of Christian faith and practice. The advance of liberation theology in the Latin American church has caused international reverberations within both the religious and political worlds. The Vatican was moved to denounce it as heretical, and the Reagan-Bush administration has deemed it a significant threat to the stability of the region. Here Batstone evaluates the writings of liberation theologians as they consider the central figure of Christian faith, Jesus of Nazareth, and asks whether a message of liberation for the poor and oppressed actually springs from the life and teachings of Jesus or is merely a religious projection of activists bent on radical social transformation. The judgment given to that issue will weigh heavily in the debate which currently rages in religious communities and seminaries over the political role and responsibility of the church. Batstone's work links these discussions to the concrete lives of the Latin American people and, in that sense, goes beneath the text and examines the subtext of religious reflection. Chapters present events and stories that originate in the daily realities of contemporary Latin America and then consider what connection these experiences have to the story of Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus without Borders
Author: Gene L. Green
Publisher: Langham Global Library
ISBN: 178368917X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
Though the makeup of the church worldwide has undeniably shifted south and east over the past few decades, very few theological resources have taken account of these changes. Jesus without Borders — the first volume in the emerging Majority World Theology series — begins to remedy that lack, bringing together select theologians and biblical scholars from various parts of the world to discuss the significance of Jesus in their respective contexts. Offering an excellent glimpse of contemporary global, evangelical dialogue on the person and work of Jesus, this volume epitomizes the best Christian thinking from the Majority World in relation to Western Christian tradition and Scripture. The contributors engage throughout with historic Christian confessions — especially the Creed of Chalcedon — and unpack their continuing relevance for Christian teaching about Jesus today.

An Alternative Vision
Author: Roger Haight
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498202314
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 351
Book Description
An Alternative Vision: An Interpretation of Liberation Theology offers a complete overview of the liberation theology movement that is ideally suited for a thorough study of the major questions and important theologians that have contributed to the debate. It outlines and brings together into a single unified account liberation theology's alternate vision for providing the possibility of meaningful historical existence for humans in the world today. The author translates the Christian vision of liberation theologians from Latin America into more general theological and cultural categories familiar to the English-speaking world, then shows how that vision makes a unified interpretation of Christian doctrine. First, liberation theology must be seen as a response to massive human suffering witnessed throughout the world today. This human agony is largely caused by human beings and the social and political structures we create, and liberation theology addresses this dilemma using the tradition of Christian wisdom and direct imperatives that have universal, transcultural significance. The second goal is achieved by showing the connection between liberation principles and the major doctrines of Christian belief, including God, Jesus Christ, faith, grace, the church, sacraments, ministry, and spirituality.
