Book Description
Chariot commander Jehu is anointed king of Israel to strike down the House of Ahab. Drawn from the biblical account of 2 Kings 9 and 10, this fictional narrative recounts Jehu’s rebellion from his early years as a charioteer under King Ahab through his anointing by a prophet under Elisha and his assault against the royal house of Israel, told in the voices of Jehu, Queen Jezebel, King Ahab, Elijah, Elisha, Jezebel’s daughter Queen Athaliah and granddaughter Jehosheba, High Priest Jehoiada, King Ethbaal I of Tyre, and others. The union of Phoenician princess Jezebel and Ahab of Israel has combined the sea powers of Tyre and Sidon and the land power of Israel—a union that is being extended to Israel’s sister kingdom of Judah with the union of Jezebel’s daughter Athaliah with the king of Judah. The melding of Phoenicia, Israel, and Judah is reaching its tipping point as a harried prophet rushes into Jehu’s army camp and anoints him king of Israel. Jezebel, her prophets of Baal, her son King Joram of Israel, her daughter Queen Athaliah of Judah, and Athaliah’s daughter Jehosheba conspire together and against each other as Jehu’s rebellion threatens Jezebel’s realm.

Book Description
King Manasseh of Judah is one of the most intriguing characters in the Bible. 2 Kings presents him as the wickedest of monarchs. In 2Kgs 24:3–4, he is accused of having provoked God to destroy Judah on account of the innocent blood he had shed in Jerusalem (cf. 2Kgs 21:16). In his study Krzysztof Kinowski investigates this accusation, viewing it against the biblical and ancient Near East backgrounds, and casts a new light upon Manasseh's role in the fall of Jerusalem. The mention of bloodshed in this affair appears to be the outcome of a process of scapegoating of Manasseh, ongoing in 2 Kings and reflecting both the legal and the cultic paradigms governing the biblical historiography. The link between Manasseh's bloodshed and the destruction of Judah on account of the cultic land's blood-defilement points towards a group of priestly scribes involved in the production of the 2Kgs 21 and 24 narratives. This assumption lies behind the scholarly discussion about the Priestly-like strata and priestly touches in the Books of Kings.

Book Description
The regnal formulas in 1-2 Kings list the name of the king's mother for Judah, signaling an importance of her position and place within the books' theological presentation. This book investigates the passages in which the king's mother appears outside of the formulas through narrative criticism and integrates that study with a theological discussion of the formulas in order to demonstrate 1-2 Kings' view of the queen mother's place in the monarchy. She held a sanctioned position within the court and had such great influence upon her son that she receives blame as part of the monarchy for the exile.

Book Description
A landmark work of Jewish history and a worldwide phenomenon when it was first published, this masterpiece of Jewish history was translated in multiple languages and instantly become the de facto standard in the field. German academic HEINRICH GRAETZ (1817-1891) brings a sympathetic Jewish perspective to the story of his own people, offering readers today an affectionate, passionate history, not a detached, clinical one. Backed by impeccable scholarship and originally published in German across 11 volumes between 1853 and 1875, this six-volume English-language edition was abridged under the direction of the author, and brought to American readers by the Jewish Publication Society of America in 1891. It remains an important work of the study of the Jewish religion and people to this day. Volume I, subtitled From the Earliest Period to the Death of Simon the Maccabee (135 B.C.E), begins with the earliest inhabitants of Canaan, hereditary law, and the exodus from Egypt, and continues through the Judean colonies in Egypt, the overthrow of the Acra and the Hellenists, and the assassination of Simon.
