Excerpt from Janus in Modern Life These papers essay an understanding of some of the various principles which underlie the course of political movements in the present age. There is no attempt at introducing any considerations which are not familiar to every intelligent person, nor any comparisons with other instances which are not already well known in history. Why considerations which seem so obvious when stated, should yet not be familiar, may perhaps be due to the estrangement between science and corporate life, which is an unhappy feature of a time of transition both in education and in motives. The point of view here is that of public and general conditions and not of private variations of beliefs. Such moral factors, though all important to the individual, are not so much the subject of the direct physical causes and effects which are here considered. Similarly the beneficial result of private benevolence is not added to these considerations, because it is largely outside of the effects of conduct, and finds its good in amending or neutralising the evil consequences of various actions. Difficult as is the matter of which it treats, the author hopes that the work to which he has devoted so many years will merit thoughtful public attention, and come to exercise some modest measure of useful influence in the gradual regeneration of culture and civilisation that will be needed when society passes from its crisis into the healing stage of its lysis. In matter so complex in its nature the author would venture in all modesty to offer the advice of Lagrange: Read backwards and forwards, in the belief that it will repay careful study. Excerpt from Janus in Roman Life and Cult: A Study in Roman Religions; A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School in Partial Fulfilment of the for the Degree or Doctor of Philosophy The conclusions reached are, for the most part, the writer's own, and differ in some respects from the usually accepted ones. However, in the chapters on the Janus Geminus, on the Relation of Janus to Other Deities and on Miscellanies, will be found little that is new. These chapters are inserted merely for the purpose of giving a complete View Of the Janus cult. The theory that the rex sacrorum was a human Jupiter has been advanced by Mr. Grant Allen, Dr. A. B. Cook, Professor Frazer and others. It remained only to add to their arguments, which are mostly anthropological, the evidence of Roman literature, and to carry the theory to the conclusion that, if a human Jupiter, the rex sacrorum was a priest of Jupiter, not of Janus, as has been hitherto maintained. Furthermore, original passages have been given as evidence that this belief accords with the character and ritual of both the rex sacrorum and of the god Janus. Evidence, besides, has been presented to show that Jupiter and Janus are not identical, as some have thought possible, but that they are quite different deities.
