Book Description
'Taylor shows how school leadership actions can turn almost any educational challenge into a positive. Her use of current school administrators as examples, the explanatory charts, and the guiding professional analysis make this book a necessary companion to implementing sustained school reform' - Mary Ann Haas, Retired Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Flagler School District, FL There is no single solution to improving learning and closing the gap for disadvantaged children. Rather, improvement is the result of a number of successful practices used together. This valuable resource shows school and district leaders how specific, consistent actions can result in dramatic change and increased student achievement. From stimulating intellectual growth to making decisions based on data, this book provides leader actions and examples of schools where the gap in learning is closing through exceptional leadership, and includes: - Numerous examples from real schools, offering descriptions and analysis of actions that increase achievement - Interviews with successful headteachers that provide a realistic look at the issues involved - A focus on second-order changes, where small improvements can create dramatic rethinking of the organization, the roles of individuals, and the approach to learning - Ample forms, sample notes, templates, and other materials to get you started Based on theory, but grounded in practice, this book shows headteachers the specific actions they need to take to drive high levels of student achievement in their schools.

Book Description
Jaime de Angulo (1887-1950) was born in Paris of Spanish parents. He came to America in 1905, found work as a cowboy, and ended up in San Francisco the day before the Great Earthquake in 1906. A picaresque life followed as a homesteader in Big Sur, medical doctor, psychologist, renowned linguist, and novelist. As a linguist, de Angulo contributed to the knowledge of many Northern Californian tribal languages, as well as ethnomusicological investigations. He lived among the tribes he studied and tried to become integrated into their daily lives. Much of his life and work exemplifies his recognition of the trickster wisdom in their native "coyote tales." Invited by Mabel Dodge Luhan to visit Taos, he turned out to be a vivid chapter in her artistic circle. Brilliant and eccentric, Ezra Pound called him "the American Ovid." Bohemian to the core, he was friend and colleague to poets, composers, and scholars such as Harry Partch, Henry Miller, Robinson Jeffers, Henry Cowell, Franz Boas, Carl Jung, D.H. Lawrence, and many others. Renderings of Pit River lore in his book Indian Tales had a distinct influence on Beat literature, especially Gary Snyder and Jack Kerouac. Besides prose, there exists an abundance of poetry which is collected in Home Among the Swinging Stars and includes the out-of-print Coyote's Bones, versions of Shaman Songs, translations of Federico GarcĂa Lorca, and unpublished poems.

Book Description
This book presents the most recent findings of twenty of the foremost European and North American researchers into the music of the Middle Ages. The chronological scope of their topics is wide, from the ninth to the fifteenth century. Wide too is the range of the subject matter: included are essays on ecclesiastical chant, early and late (and on the earliest and latest of its supernumerary tropes, monophonic and polyphonic); on the innovative and seminal polyphony of Notre-Dame de Paris, and the Latin poetry associated with the great cathedral; on the liturgy of Paris, Rome and Milan; on musical theory; on the emotional reception of music near the end of the medieval period and the emergence of modern sensibilities; even on methods of encoding the melodies that survive from the Middle Ages, encoding that makes it practical to apply computer-assisted analysis to their vast number. The findings presented in this book will be of interest to those engaged by music and the liturgy, active researchers and students. All the papers are carefully and extensively documented by references to medieval sources.

Book Description
This book is an examination of the use of the family album in contemporary Spanish culture. Through the analysis of films, narratives, painting, and a photographic exhibition produced from the end of Franco's dictatorship to the present, Kim interrogates how the family album serves as a critical instrument to reflect on the treatment of the past in contemporary Spain, the recuperation of repressed identities, nostalgia for collective memory symptomatic of the cultural discontent with the erosion of a national boundary due to globalization and the increasing claim of diversity, and ethical concerns for immigration. This study explores a broad range of works by canonical as well as less studied writers and artists, including Juan Goytisolo, Carlos Saura, and Marta Balletbo-Coll. Yeon-Soo Kim is Assistant Professor of Spanish at Rutgers University.
