Book Description
Children from poor families generally do a lot worse than children from affluent families. They are more likely to develop behavior problems, to score lower on standardized tests, and to become adults in need of public assistance. Susan Mayer asks whether income directly affects children's life chances, as many experts believe, or if the factors that cause parents to have low incomes also impede their children's life chances. She explores the question of causation with remarkable ingenuity. First, she compares the value of income from different sources to determine, for instance, if a dollar from welfare is as valuable as a dollar from wages. She then investigates whether parents' income after an event, such as teenage childbearing, can predict that event. If it can, this suggests that income is a proxy for unmeasured characteristics that affect both income and the event. Next she compares children living in states that pay high welfare benefits with children living in states with low benefits. Finally, she examines whether national income trends have the expected impact on children. Regardless of the research technique, the author finds that the effect of income on children's outcomes is smaller than many experts have thought. Mayer then shows that the things families purchase as their income increases, such as cars and restaurant meals, seldom help children succeed. On the other hand, many of the things that do benefit children, such as books and educational outings, cost so little that their consumption depends on taste rather than income. Money alone, Mayer concludes, does not buy either the material or the psychological well-being that children require to succeed.

Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book Description
Castles & Buttons (Book Three) Susan James How to Have Everything by Doing Nothing Advanced Higher Mechanics Castles & Buttons- Book Three How to Have Everything by Doing Nothing Advanced Higher Mechanics Anyone reading any of the greats from Emerson, Cady to Neville to Abraham-Hicks and so many, many more, from Metaphysics to Theosophy, the Esoteric and beyond, we are told that everything is possible, there are no limits and we can have anything we desire to have. It is that promise which keeps many of us on the steady higher path. The Higher Law operates with simple guidelines: • Have the Idea (which is ‘thought') • Add The Affirmation (which is also ‘thought') All else is taken care of by the Law. For some of us, including me, there have been some in- between stages to the above 2 steps. (As in Don't keep changing our mind by adding doubt, fear, lack of confidence, etc.) We have to expand our understanding of a Source outside of our humanity. At one time, I was so off the path of higher anything, but I didn't know any different. My life reflected my lack of knowledge and understanding. But ‘something' kept me moving higher, bit by bit. ‘Something' kept me safe. And bit by bit, the things that did not feel nor look good in my life, began to drop away. It was my willingness to be open to things I did not yet understand, but wanted to ‘believe' in, such as, the promise of better, of good, of wonder. The Fairy Tale. ‘Something' kept moving me forward into believing in the fairy tale. For me The Fairy Tale was about happy endings, happy in between, happy everything. All of which our culture does not necessary have credence for. This 4th Installment in the Castles Series, this being Castle’s Book 3 continues in the experience of The Promise The Bounty. It’s what has kept me ‘after it’; to understand it and apply it. Some of the themes covered in this Book 3 of the Series: • The Promise of The Bounty • How to Believe in The Fairy Tale, When We Don't Yet • Electrons and Puppies for Manifestation • How To Convince Yourself It's Yours • When It Feels More Like a Castle Than A Button • When You Just Can't Get Over ‘Not Liking It'. • Being Thankful When You Can't Find a Way to Feel It • Susan's Example From Her Livelihood • The I AM and Financial Independence • Tomatoes and The Three Billionaires • The I AM and Financial Independence • The Correct Use of Spiritual Technology • Opening The Floodgates On Supply • Excitement Plus Anticipation Equals Expectation • Effortless Fun • Is It Time to Re-Invent Yourself? • Why We MUST Choose The Castles of Our Lives • Great Abundance NEEDS Our Castles • How I've Used This Information • The Ambition of Achieving One Thought Creation • Benefits of Thought Games • The Fire Letters and Manifestation • Asking and Other Higher Tools of Action • The Importance of Having More Light • The Difference Between Prayer and Decrees • What Releases The Power of Higher Light? • The Overall Higher Intention • Largesse Abundance (What it Is and How to Have It) • From Out of Bounds to Boundaries Have Been Moved • The Higher We Go (In Light Energy) The Easier It • The Overall Goal of Creation (Delight) • A Strategy for Believing You Have It • How to Allow (What is Vibrational Acceptance?) • How Possibilities Move Into Probabilities • The Last Piece of Our Desire Fulfilment Puzzle Enjoy the entire Castle’s and Buttons Series and you too may then understand how creating Castles or Buttons is the same and everything you want is already there for you!

Book Description
This is the authors life story, told in an uncommonly graphic style. Severely abused as a child and continuing to be victimized as an adult, Susan lived a confused double existence, as a respected attorney and administrative law judge at Two World Trade Center in Manhattan and, after hours, as a partner with her ex-husband in a drugged out, violent lifestyle. Her actions were a desperate attempt to block out memories that were too painful to remember, let alone cope with in any effective way. However, Susan refused to give up and reached for what she never had and what we all needlove. At the mature age of fifty-two, Susan made Jesus her Savior and Lord and was thus born again. As her relationship with the Lord matured and became more intimate, a series of miracles began taking place, inside and on the outside of the author. For example, her inside scars of abuse and powerful drug addiction were lifted from her. In addition, the Lord straightened Susans curved spine from forty-five degrees to approximately twenty degrees! It is the authors desire to encourage all persons that it is possible to overcome even the worst of situations when one steps into the light (and the love) of our mighty God.

Book Description
In the critically acclaimed Five Men Who Broke My Heart, Manhattan journalist Susan Shapiro revisited five self-destructive romances. In her hilarious, illuminating new memoir, Lighting Up, she rejects five self-destructive substances. This difficult quest for clean living starts with Shapiro’s shocking revelation that, at forty, her lengthiest, most emotionally satisfying relationship has been with cigarettes. A two-pack-a-day smoker since the age of thirteen, Susan Shapiro quickly discovers that it’s impossible to be a writer, a nonsmoker, sane, and slender in the same year. The last time she tried to quit, she gained twenty-three pounds, couldn’t concentrate on work, and wanted to kill herself and her husband, Aaron, a TV comedy writer who hates her penchant for puffing away. Yet just as she’s about to choose her vice over her marriage vows, she stumbles upon a secret weapon. Dr. Winters, “the James Bond of psychotherapy,” is a brilliant but unorthodox addiction specialist, a former chain-smoker himself. Working his weird magic on her psyche, he unravels the roots of her twenty-seven-year compulsion, the same dangerous dependency that has haunted her doctor father, her grandfather, and a pair of eccentric aunts from opposite sides of the family, along with Freud and nearly one in four Americans. Dr. Winters teaches her how to embrace suffering, then proclaims that her months of panic, depression, insecurity, vulnerability, and wild mood swings win her the award for “the worst nicotine withdrawal in the history of the world.” Shapiro finally does kick the habit–while losing weight and finding career and connubial bliss–only to discover that the second she’s let go of her long-term crutch, she’s already replaced it with another fixation. After banishing cigarettes, alcohol, dope, gum, and bread from her day-to-day existence, she conquers all her demons and survives deprivation overload. But relying religiously on Dr. Winters, she soon realizes that the only obsession she has left to quit is him. . . . Never has the battle to stem substance abuse been captured with such wit, sophisticated insight, and candor. Lighting Up is so compulsively readable, it’s addictive.

Book Description
Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Money—investing, personal finance, and business decisions—is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.
