Radulphus Brito. Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis
Author: Gordon A. Wilson
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9462700869
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 685
Book Description
The history of logic and its development during the medieval period Radulphus Brito’s Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis is a major work written in the early 1300s which treated Aristotle’s text devoted to the theory of the syllogism. Brito, perhaps one of the most influential medieval thinkers known as the Modistae, examines both categorical and hypothetical syllogisms. In his text, based on six known manuscripts which are complete or nearly complete, Brito was critical of many of the theories of his contemporary, Simon of Faversham. It should also be mentioned that Brito edited his work several times. There are at least two versions which indicate Brito returned to this material during his long career at the university in Paris. This volume is the first critical text edition of Brito’s Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis and will therefore be of great interest to those studying the history of logic and its development during the medieval period.

Giannozzo Manetti's New Testament
Author: Annet den Haan
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004324372
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 557
Book Description
In Giannozzo Manetti’s New Testament Annet den Haan analyses the Latin translation of the Greek New Testament made by the fifteenth-century humanist Giannozzo Manetti (1396-1459). The book includes the first edition of Manetti’s text. Manetti’s translation was the first since Jerome’s Vulgate, and it predates Erasmus’ Novum Instrumentum by half a century. Written at the Vatican court in the 1450s, it is a unique example of humanist philology applied to the sacred text in the pre-Reformation era. Den Haan argues that Manetti’s translation was influenced by Valla’s Annotationes, and compares Manetti’s translation method with his treatise on correct translation, Apologeticus (1458).
