Mostly remembered for his library and for his biblical criticism, Isaac Vossius (1618-1689) played a central role in the early modern European world of learning. Taking his cue from the unlikely bedfellows Joseph Scaliger and René Descartes, Vossius published on chronology, biblical criticism, optics, African geography and Chinese civilization, while collecting, annotating and selling one of the century’s most precious libraries. He was appointed an early Fellow of the Royal Society, and moved in the circles which later gave rise to the Académie Royale des Sciences. Together with Christiaan Huygens, he was considered the Dutch Republic’s foremost student of nature. In this volume, a range of authors analyse Vossius’ participation in the full spectrum of the Republic of Letters, much of which has sadly been written out of the history of both scholarship and science. From the dawn of the early modern period around 1400 until the eighteenth century, Latin was still the European language and its influence extended as far as Asia and the Americas. At the same time, the production of Latin writing exploded thanks to book printing and new literary and cultural dynamics. This collection of essays treats a topic that has scarcely been approached in the literature on Hebrew and Hebraism in the early modern period. In the seventeenth century, Christians, especially Protestants, studied the Mishnah alongside a host of Jewish commentaries in order to reconstruct Jewish culture, history, and ritual, shedding new light on the world of the Old and New Testaments. Their work was also inextricably dependent upon the vigorous Mishnaic studies of early modern Jewish communities. Both traditions, in a sense, culminated in the monumental production in six volumes of an edition and Latin translation of the Mishnah published by Guilielmus Surenhusius in Amsterdam between 1698 and 1703. Surenhusius gathered up more than a century's worth of Mishnaic studies by scholars from England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as well as the commentaries of Maimonides and Obadiah of Bertinoro (c. 1455-c.1515), but this edition was also born out of the unique milieu of Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth century, a place which offered possibilities for cross-cultural interactions between Jews and Christians. With Surenhusius's great volumes as an end point, the essays presented here discuss for the first time the multiple ways in which the canonical text of Jewish law, the Mishnah (c.200 CE), was studied by a variety of scholars, both Jewish and Christian, in early modern Europe. They tell the story of how the Mishnah generated an encounter between different cultures, faiths, and confessions that would prove to be enduringly influential for centuries to come.

The Septuagint is the term commonly used to refer to the corpus of early Greek versions of Hebrew Scriptures. The collection is of immense importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. This essay does not concern the manuscript transmission of the short series of poems (the so-called minor anthologiae) and of the single ‘wandering’ texts contained in the critical edition by A. Riese, Anthologia Latina I2 1-2, Lipsiae 1894-1906 (which is today generally considered a reference edition), but regards the two large compact anthologies called Salmasiana and Vossiana, standing almost totally in the first of the two books, and normally designated with the overall title Anthologia Latina. Aiming at their total re-edition, the School on the Anthologia Latina of Perugia has so far edited the new critical editions and the essays contained within the series “Anthologiarum Latinarum I (1 Anthologia Vossiana), II (1 Anonymi versus serpentini, 2 Vnius poetae sylloge, 3 Coronatus)” and “Anthologiarum Latinarum parerga I-V”, and published the issues I-VII, 2010-16, of “AL. Rivista di studi di Anthologia Latina”. In the appendix there is the study on the circulation of the codex plenior (reconstructed in the light of the still unpublished letters which its owner, Claude de Saumaise, and his friend, Isaac Voss, wrote to each other a few years before the mid-seventeenth century) which refers to the subject of the essays Apographa Salmasiana 1 and 2 (Hildesheim 2004 and 2010 respectively).
