Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (2021), el suicidio y los comportamientos suicidas se han convertido en un grave problema de salud pública. Actualmente se ubica como la tercera causa de muerte a nivel mundial. La franja etaria que mayor preocupación genera es la de jóvenes de 15 a 24 años. En América Latina, Uruguay, Cuba y Chile exhiben las tasas de prevalencia más elevadas de muertes por suicidio, con la Argentina en el cuarto lugar. En este contexto, disponer de una herramienta de evaluación sencilla y breve, y con adecuado ajuste psicométrico, que permita detectar y estimar el potencial suicida en población adolescente se ha vuelto una necesidad urgente. A ello se han abocado las Dras. Aixa Galarza, Claudia Castañeiras y Mercedes Fernández Liporace, quienes han elaborado el Inventario de Riesgo Suicida para Adolescentes - IRSA, un instrumento de evaluación del riesgo suicida aplicable a sujetos de 13 a 22 años. La técnica cuenta con dos escalas para una evaluación en dos fases sucesivas: IRSA-S (Screening), que realiza un primer rastrillaje para detectar casos de riesgo suicida, e IRSA-D (Diagnóstico), inventario que debe ser administrado con posterioridad en aquellos casos en que se haya evidenciado riesgo en la primera fase para precisar el grado de intencionalidad suicida. Todo ello, desde luego, con miras a realizar una eficaz intervención. La obra desarrolla sintéticamente los principales conceptos y teorías contemporáneas, así como el estado actual de la evaluación psicológica del riesgo suicida. Se presentan los Inventarios IRSA-S e IRSA-D, sus pautas de administración, puntuación e interpretación, a la vez que el proceso de diseño y los estudios psicométricos, para los cuales se contó con la colaboración del Dr. Agustín Freiberg-Hoffmann. Y, finalmente, se incorpora la valiosa colaboración de una especialista en el campo de la clínica de adolescentes, la Dra. Mariana Maristany, quien propone un modelo de abordaje clínico y psicoterapéutico para jóvenes con riesgo suicida.

Suicide is one of the most important causes of death in modern societies. To develop more effective preventive measures, we have to be aware of and learn more about its neurobiological foundations. In recent years, the tools of modern neurosciences have increasingly been utilized to characterize the pathophysiology of complex human behaviors such as suicide. To improve suicide risk assessment and suicide prevention, a better understanding of its pathophysiology is crucial. This includes research from a variety of disciplines such as neuropsychological, psychosocial and cultural studies but also findings from biochemistry, neuropathology, electrophysiology, immunology, neuroimaging, genetics, and epigenetics. Important results have, for example, been obtained in the field of gene-environment interaction and suicidal behavior. We have just begun to understand how early-life adversity may increase suicide risk by epigenetic mechanisms. Based on such insights, novel therapeutic interventions and preventive measures can be developed. Furthermore, a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in suicidal behavior could reveal the mechanism of compounds like lithium salts. In this book, suicidal behavior and its prevention is discussed by international experts in the light of the most recent results from a broad spectrum of neurosciences.

El riesgo suicida en adolescentes es una problemática de diferentes aristas que se manifiesta en ideación, intento, gestos suicidas, entre otros comportamientos encubiertos y explícitos. Además, se ha relacionado frecuentemente con la presencia de trastornos del estado de ánimo como la depresión. Este libro presenta el programa CIPRÉS, el cual surgió de un estudio mixto en el que se entrevistaron a 255 adolescentes entre 13 y 18 años clasificados según sus medidas de bienestar y riesgo suicida, con el propósito de explorar las nociones, estrategias y acciones desarrolladas por los jóvenes para mantener su propio bienestar psicológico. Sus resultados indicaron las áreas de intervención del programa y las actividades específicas a ejecutar. Este programa fue validado en el año 2017, al comprobar su efectividad para la reducción del riesgo suicida en 106 adolescentes mediante metodología de cuasiexperimento con medidas pretest, postest y grupo control. Se ha nombrado CIPRÉS, haciendo uso de la simbología que rodea este árbol y que se centra en sus propiedades físicas que le hacen una planta que crece permanentemente y con el paso del tiempo se hace más fuerte y majestuoso. La cualidad perenne de sus hojas representa su proceso de crecimiento continuo e ininterrumpido, el cual se busca desarrollar en los adolescentes con este programa, dado su énfasis en el crecimiento personal desde los aspectos positivos.
