Book Description
In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.

Book Description
Inverse problems are concerned with determining causes for observed or desired effects. Problems of this type appear in many application fields both in science and in engineering. The mathematical modelling of inverse problems usually leads to ill-posed problems, i.e., problems where solutions need not exist, need not be unique or may depend discontinuously on the data. For this reason, numerical methods for solving inverse problems are especially difficult, special methods have to be developed which are known under the term "regularization methods". This volume contains twelve survey papers about solution methods for inverse and ill-posed problems and about their application to specific types of inverse problems, e.g., in scattering theory, in tomography and medical applications, in geophysics and in image processing. The papers have been written by leading experts in the field and provide an up-to-date account of solution methods for inverse problems.

Book Description
Inverse problems in wave propagation occur in geophysics, ocean acoustics, civil and environmental engineering, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, biomedical ultrasonics, radar, astrophysics, as well as other areas of science and technology. The papers in this volume cover these scientific and technical topics, together with fundamental mathematical investigations of the relation between waves and scatterers.

Book Description
In the first, 1986, edition of this book, inverse problems in vibration were interpreted strictly: problems concerning the reconstruction of a unique, undamped vibrating system, of a specified type, from specified vibratory behaviour, particularly specified natural frequencies and/or natural mode shapes. In this new edition the scope of the book has been widened to include topics such as isospectral systems- families of systems which all exhibit some specified behaviour; applications of the concept of Toda flow; new, non-classical approaches to inverse Sturm-Liouville problems; qualitative properties of the modes of some finite element models; damage identification. With its emphasis on analysis, on qualitative results, rather than on computation, the book will appeal to researchers in vibration theory, matrix analysis, differential and integral equations, matrix analysis, non-destructive testing, modal analysis, vibration isolation, etc. "This book is a necessary addition to the library of engineers and mathematicians working in vibration theory." Book Description
Automorphic L-functions, introduced by Robert Langlands in the 1960s, are natural extensions of such classical L-functions as the Riemann zeta function, Hecke L-functions, etc. They form an important part of the Langlands Program, which seeks to establish connections among number theory, representation theory, and geometry. This book offers, via the Rankin-Selberg method, a thorough and comprehensive examination of the degree 16 standard L-function of the product of two rank two symplectic similitude groups, which includes the study of the global integral of Rankin-Selberg type and local integrals, analytic properties of certain Eisenstein series of symplectic groups, and the relevant residue representations.

Book Description
In this book, the author studies the Dirichlet series whose coefficients are the number of orders of a quartic field with given indices. Nakagawa gives an explicit expression of the Dirichlet series. Using this expression, its analytic properties are deduced. He also presents an asymptotic formula for the number of orders in a quartic field with index less than a given positive number.

Book Description
We are interested in the time-asymptotic behavior of solutions to viscous conservation laws. Through the pointwise estimates for the Green's function of the linearized system and the analysis of coupling of nonlinear diffusion waves, we obtain explicit expressions of the time-asymptotic behavior of the solutions. This yields optimal estimates in the integral norms. For most physical models, the viscosity matrix is not positive definite and the system is hyperbolic-parabolic, and not uniformly parabolic. This implies that the Green's function may contain Dirac [lowercase Greek]Delta-functions. When the corresponding inviscid system is non-strictly hyperbolic, the time-asymptotic state contains generalized Burgers solutions. These are illustrated by applying our general theory to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics.

Book Description
In this book, the author introduces and studies the construction of the crossed product of a von Neumann algebra. This construction is the generalization of the construction of the crossed product of an abelian von Neumann algebra by an equivalence relation introduced by J. Feldman and C. C. Moore. Many properties of this construction are proved in the general case. In addition, the generalizations of the Spectral Theorem on Bimodules and of the theorem on dilations are proved.

Book Description
The theory of simple algebraic groups is important in many areas of mathematics. The authors of this book investigate the subgroups of certain types of simple algebraic groups and obtain a complete description of all those subgroups which are themselves simple. This description is particularly useful in understanding centralizers of subgroups and restrictions of representations.
