In this wide-ranging historical introduction to philosophical hermeneutics, Jean Grondin discusses the major figures from Philo to Habermas, analyzes conflicts between various interpretive schools, and provides a persuasive critique of Gadamer's view of hermeneutic history, though in other ways Gadamer's Truth and Method serves as a model for Grondin's approach. Grondin begins with brief overviews of the pre-nineteenth-century thinkers Philo, Origen, Augustine, Luther, Flacius, Dannhauer, Chladenius, Meier, Rambach, Ast, and Schlegel. Next he provides more extensive treatments of such major nineteenth-century figures as Schleiermacher, Böckh, Droysen, and Dilthey. There are full chapters devoted to Heidegger and Gadamer as well as shorter discussions of Betti, Habermas, and Derrida. Because he is the first to pay close attention to pre-Romantic figures, Grondin is able to show that the history of hermeneutics cannot be viewed as a gradual, steady progression in the direction of complete universalization. His book makes it clear that even in the early period, hermeneutic thinkers acknowledged a universal aspect in interpretation--that long before Schleiermacher, hermeneutics was philosophical and not merely practical. In revising and correcting the standard account, Grondin's book is not merely introductory but revisionary, suitable for beginners as well as advanced students in the field.

Il est devenu banal de déplorer une crise généralisée de la vérité. Celle-ci atteint de plein fouet la théologie chrétienne. Mais plutôt que de renvoyer dos à dos ceux qui désespèrent de toute vérité normative et ceux qui par réaction absolutisent les vérités dites objectives, il s'agirait d'interpréter la vérité qui nous est confiée dans la Révélation en tenant compte du régime nouveau de l'esprit humain. Dans son livre, Le Christianisme au risque de l'interprétation (1983), l'auteur avait déjà esquissé les grandes lignes d'un projet de théologie herméneutique. Dans ce nouvel essai, il rappelle les exigences d'une situation herméneutique qui conditionne l'intelligence pour aujourd'hui de l'Écriture et de la tradition de l'Église. L'herméneutique conciliaire ne doit pas être en effet plus timide qu'une herméneutique biblique. Mais il a surtout le souci de manifester les enjeux théologiques des diverses formes de néofondamentalisme qui méconnaissent le statut herméneutique de toute vérité chrétienne que ce soit sous sa forme scripturaire ou dogmatique. Une théologie herméneutique se veut nécessairement attentive au contenu de l'expérience historique qui est celle de l'Église. Or, il apparaît que le pluralisme religieux sera le grand défi de la théologie chrétienne au XXIème siècle. Il s'agit alors de montrer toute la distance entre une simple théologie du salut des infidèles et une théologie des religions qui s'interroge sur la signification du pluralisme religieux dans l'unique dessein de Dieu. Cette théologie des religions se transforme en théologie interreligieuse pour chercher à réinterpréter la singularité chrétienne en fonction de la part d'irréductible dont les autres traditions religieuses sont porteuses. On pourra vérifier la fécondité d'une telle approche en lisant les deux chapitres du livre qui sont consacrés au dialogue judéo-chrétien et au dialogue islamo-chrétien. Ce livre très accessible a donc l'ambition d'introduire un large public aux orientations les plus prometteuses de la théologie du XXIème siècle.
