The proposed project consists of constructing an Interstate 35 (I-35) interchange at or near NE 36th Street in Ankeny, Iowa. Most of the project is located in the northeast portion of the City of Ankeny but small portions are also located in unincorporated Polk County. The project area includes the I-35 corridor beginning at the existing Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) rest area, approximately 1.5 miles north of NE 36th Street.

The project area is located within the city limits of Ankeny, Iowa. The project area is situated in Section 7 and 18, Township 80 North, Range 23 West in Polk County, Iowa. The proposed action is to extend NE 18th Street as a two-lane facility from NE Delaware Avenue east to the NE Frisk Drive/NE102nd Street intersection. The total length of the proposed action is approximately 3,100 feet and will include the construction of a new bridge over I-35 and replacing the existing one-lane concrete arch bridge over Fourmile Creek. This roadway will be an urban section, meaning it will have curb and gutter for its entire length. The proposed action generally follows the existing alignment of NE 18th Street and NE 102nd Street.

Iowa's Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) has been developed in conformance with the guidelines prescribed by 23 USC and 49 USC. The STIP is generated to provide the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) a listing of all projects that are candidates for federal aid from the FHWA and FTA for four federal fiscal years (FFY). Preceding the listings of federal-aid candidates are general comments concerning Iowa's public participation process for selection of federal-aid projects and the basis for funding the proposed projects. Documents evidencing the Iowa Department of Transportation's (Iowa DOT) authority to act concerning matters related to transportation, federal-aid expenditures and approvals of Metropolitan Planning Organizations' (MPOs) Transportation Improvements Programs (TIPs) have been provided in past STIP's and can be provided again upon request.
