In the Asia-Pacific region, international trade has proven to be an engine of growth which underscores the need for policies on environment and trade to be mutually supportive. This project considers such countries as Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, Republic of Korea and Vietnam. It provides a regional overview on trade and environmental issues which could have restrictive effects on inter-regional trade, and environmental problems arising from export products of the region and measures required for their mitigation. The project indicates that economies in the Asia and Pacific region are heavily dependent on the utilization of their ecosystems to provide their economic resource base. Development requires open international market for regional exports drown from these resources. It is recommended that co-operation and co-ordination among the countries of the Asian and Pacific region should be promoted to build their capacity in the formulation of environmental policies to sustain both welfare increases and the natural environmental resource base.

This paper develops new, far more extensive estimates of export quality, covering 178 countries and hundreds of products over 1962–2010. Quality upgrading is particularly rapid during the early stages of development, with quality convergence largely completed as a country reaches upper middle-income status. There is significant cross-country heterogeneity in quality growth rates. Within any given product line, quality converges both conditionally and unconditionally to the world frontier; increases in institutional quality and human capital are associated with faster quality upgrading. In turn, faster growth in quality is associated with more rapid output growth. The evidence suggests that quality upgrading is best encouraged through a broadly conducive domestic environment, rather than sector-specific policies. Diversification is important to create new upgrading opportunities.

Contemporary trade policy is increasingly framed in geo-strategic terms. But how much of that rhetoric is reflected in actual policy choices by the EU or its trading partners? This book provides a first systematic study of the broader international context in which EU trade agreements are conceived, negotiated, and designed. Building on a refined conceptualisation of geo-economics, the book develops a cogent framework that combines insights from scholarship on the design of free trade agreements with ideas from foreign policy analysis.
