Book Description
Excerpt from Poultry Culture for Profit: With a Chapter on the Intensive System; Illustrated Guide to the General Management of Poultry, Including Selection, Housing, Hatching, Rearing, Feeding, Marketing, Etc This little book is written with the desire to interest and to help the beginner and the amateur in poultry culture. It is written from a utility point of view. Many of its injunctions are "as old as the hills," and though they may lack novelty, they are none the worse for that. A well-worn path is easier to tread. Other points in the book have not been so commonly insisted upon. I have found them useful and give them for what they are worth. I am greatly indebted to many who have gone before me, and more especially to the late Mr. Lewis Wright, who most kindly encouraged my earliest efforts in writing. I consider his great work, "The Book of Poultry," by far the best contribution to the poultry literature of our age. I have also acknowledged my indebtedness to the various writers and speakers at the National Poultry Conference held at Reading in July of this year. I should likewise express my thanks to the Proprietors of Feathered Life for permission to use several of the illustrations which appear in the text. I hope that a companion volume may shortly follow, as an endeavour to assist the aspirant for honours in the exhibition poultry world. If in any homestead two eggs are laid where one was laid before, my efforts will be amply repaid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Poultry Culture In no section of the country is soil better adapted to poultry. Most parts of the State have a light, sandy or gravelly loam. There is no danger, therefore, of its becoming contaminated with droppings, as it is leached out by the heavy rains. On such farms in New England poultry have been kept on the same land for forty years with no serious results. Of course, I refer now especially to poultry farms, not general farms where only a few fowls are kept, and to the extensive rather than the intensive system. Again, much of the soil here is adapted to the growth of corn, mangels, beets and all kinds of green crops for poultry. Its sandy condition gives a quick growth which means tender, palatable green food throughout the growing season. The fact that our soil and climate are well adapted to all kinds of fruit is an advantage that cannot be overlooked. Fruit trees not only yield a crop, but furnish shade in summer and windbreaks in winter. Much Of the soil is well suited to the production of corn, and immense crops can be produced by raising corn and poultry on the same ground in alternate years. Very little fertilizer other than that produced by the poultry need be used, other things being equal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from American Poultry Culture The object of this volume is to furnish reliable and practical information on the profitable care and management of poultry. I have endeavored to take the reader, presumably a beginner, into the field of practical poultry work, telling him what to do, and how and when to do it. I have catered especially to those who desire to keep only a small flock of fowls for pleasure or profit, but most of the matter contained herein will also apply to poultry keeping on a more extensive scale. In order to make this treatise as brief and yet as comprehensive as possible, everything of a theoretical or imaginative nature has been omitted, as well as all unnecessary things. I have made use of only valuable and practical facts, which are the result of my personal experience in the handling of fowls on both a large and a small scale. This is, essentially, a business book for busy people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture Need of instruction. The practice of poultry culture is an art or a craft or a combination of art and craft according to the purpose for which it is pursued and the taste and skill of those engaged in it. A workman may attain great proficiency in many operations merely through skill in imitation. Such a workman, however, must work always after a model or under the direction of one familiar with all phases of his art or craft and thoroughly under standing its principles. In any enterprise engaging large numbers of people, only a small proportion of these need be qualified to oversee and direct the work; but as the number of persons engaged diminishes, the proportion understanding the processes involved and their relations must increase, until, in such occupa tions as farming and housekeeping, each husbandman and house wife must be able to do and to direct the doing of a variety of operations, adapting and adjusting all to the general result sought. The relation of this fact to agricultural and technical education has not been sufficiently emphasized. Considering it here only in its application to poultry culture, it is plain that a general knowl edge of the subject is as necessary and as useful to one whose plans contemplate perhaps the maintenance of a flock of a few hundred fowls on the farm as to one who intends to undertake operations on a large scale. Both require the same preparation, as far as preparation can be given by book and class instruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Twentieth Century Poultry Culture If you are rich the case is different. But the man with less than fifty thousand dollars in the bank is not going to buy many eggs at eighty cents a dozen. Put them within his reach, however, and every common la borer will have the beautiful ova'ls on his table in some form every day and a juicy rooster every time he can persuade his wife to cook it. Book Description
Excerpt from Paynter's System of Poultry Rearing: Or a Year From Hens I read through every new book on Poultry which I happen to see, and have come to the conclusion that they are as a rule much too long, and all that the public wish to be told is, in as few words and as clearly as possible, how to make eggs and table poultry pay by well-tried simple systems of feed ing and general management. Book Description
Excerpt from The Farm-Poultry, Vol. 25: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Poultry Culture and Allied Interests; March 1914 The decay of the intensive type of poultry farming here did not mean a diminution of interest in poultry culture or in production. It followed a greater awaken ing of interest in poultry among farmers in this section, and a consequently inevitable shifting of the work of production. It is almost a universal rule that the success of special poultry farming stimulates the production of poultry on the general farm, and that in time this com petition makes the special farms that are affected by it unprofitable.
