Book Description
Designed as a self-contained guide, this clear and efficient handbook takes students through the steps and strategies of writing research papers in many disciplines. It introduces two documentation styles for the humanities and two for the social and natural sciences, giving instructors tremendous flexibility in adapting the guide to discipline-specific assignments. Set apart by its appreciation of the experiences of real people undertaking research, this substantially revised fourth edition also focuses on the critical thinking processes essential to research and writing. The new edition is written in a personal, sensible first-person voice that speaks directly to students.

Book Description
In September 1989, dogs and sheep died at Rutland Water following the ingestion of a scum of toxic blue-green algae. The NRA therefore undertook the first major national appraisal of blue-green algae throughout England and Wales. Their report describes the results of the 1989 survey and looks at how events were managed. Recommendations are made for future management, monitoring, research and development. It also reviews blue-green algal toxins, the factors which affect blue-green algal bloom production and approaches to controlling algal populations.

Book Description
The main objective of the Water Framework Directive in the European countries is to achieve a “good status” of all the water bodies, in the integrated management of river basins. In order to assess the impact of improvement measures, water quality models are necessary. During the previous decades the progress in computer technology and computational methods has supported the development of advanced mathematical models for pollutant transport in rivers and streams. This book is intended to provide the fundamental knowledge needed for a deeper understanding of these models and the development of new ones, which will fulfil future quality requirements in water resources management. This book focuses on the fundamentals of computational techniques required in water quality modelling. Advection, dispersion and concentrated sources or sinks of contaminants lead to the formulation of the fundamental differential equation of pollutant transport. Its integration, according to appropriate initial and boundary conditions and with the knowledge of the velocity field, allows for pollutant behaviour to be assessed in the entire water body. An analytical integration is convenient only in one-dimensional approach with considerable simplification. Integration in the numerical field is useful for taking into account particular aspects of water body and pollutants. To ensure their reliability, the models require accurate calibration and validation, based on proper data, taken from direct measurements. In addition, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis are also of utmost importance. All the above items are discussed in detail in the 21 chapters of the book, which is written in a didactic form for professionals and students.

Book Description
This book examines the process of collecting traditional environmental knowledge while using a "participatory action" or "community-based" approach. It looks at the problems associated with documenting traditional knowledge - problems that are shared by researchers around the world - and it explores some of the means by which traditional knowledge can be integrated with Western science to improve methods of natural resource management. Includes the Dene of the Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, and the Inuit of Sanikiluaq, Belcher Islands
