Book Description
Part of the series "New Concepts in Polymer Science", this volume contains information on the main theoretical and practical problems involved in radiation chemistry of polymers. The processes of polymerization and modification of polymers by grafting, crosslinking and degradation, induced by ionizing radiation, are all described, as well as the radiation resistance of polymers and their protection from radiation. The book also contains applications of radiation chemistry of polymers, such as: principles of selection of radiation-chemical processes for industrial use; choice of radiation sources for specific processes; modification of textile and film materials by grafting; manufacturing of heat-shrinkable, thermostable and mechanically strong polymer products; composites; rubber vulcanizates and self-adhesive products; paints and coatings; man-made fibres; materials for microelectronics; and polymer materials for medical purposes.

Book Description
Carotenoids are an essential component of the human diet. Bioactive by nature, they are rich in antioxidants, promote vitamin A activity and lower the development of chronic illnesses. As such they are an area of growing interest to researchers and scientists who are working to design, develop and launch new functional food products, dietary supplements and other nutritional solutions. Carotenoids: Nutrition, Analysis and Technology is an up-to-date overview of the key areas of carotenoids in nutrition, therapy and technology. In the first section, the authors present a functional food perspective, outlining the therapeutic applications of the bioactive pigments. The second part is dedicated to the spectroscopic analysis of carotenoids, providing in-depth scientific methods and real research findings. In the final section, various technological applications of carotenoids are considered, including biotechnology and future prospects. Written by international experts in the field, this comprehensive book will be of interest to food scientists and researchers, nutritionists and health food companies. It will be of particular use to anyone involved in the spectroscopic analysis of carotenoids and other related bioactives.

Book Description
These notes on the use of one particular form of the time-dependent rate constant to describe the reaction patterns in condensed media have been put together primarily to encourage chemists to try and accept this new way of experimental data treatment. A number of applications is shown and interpretative aspects are discussed. Emphasized are the problems that need to be currently solved. Some of them are also of current interest in condensed phase physics from which the chemical kinetics benefits a great deal. It was inevitable that the choice of subject matter from both rapidly expanding fields and its form of pre sentation reflect to some extent the author's own interests and some important topics are treated briefly or even omitted. Fully recognizing this, I would like to acknowledge with gratitude the contributions to the subject of all my coworkers in the Laboratories of Lodz, Detroit Mi, MUlheim/Ruhr, and Houston Tx, and of those who helped me in preparing this text. Dr. Wlodzi~ierz Lefik and my son WojciecQ recalculated most of the experimental results, Mrs. Aleksandra Karczewska redrew all the figures. Special thanks go to my wife Ewa for her invaluable assistance in all works and for the final form of the text. AP Lodz, February 1986 CONTENTS 1. Introduction 1 2. Reaction kinetics of species trapped in glassy matrices 6 Excess electrons (6): Post-irradiated decay (6). Spectral relaxation (11). Photostimulated decay (15). Photostimu lated conversion into trapped hydrogen atoms (17). Radio luminescence kinetics (21).

Book Description
An algorithm has been developed for transforming certain types of Wiswesser organic structure notations into connection tables.Acyclic and benzene structures are treated, and provision was made for all of the types of contractions used by the Wiswesser notation system.A separate algorithm is presented for treating linearly fused ring aggregates. A syntax was developed to describe those portions of Wiswesser notations which refer to non-benzene ring systems.(Author).
