Book Description
Instabilities in a Confined Plasma is entirely devoted to a theoretical exposition of the subject of plasma instabilities in confined systems. The book is an important contribution to the study of plasma instabilities, not only in fusion devices such as the Tokamak but also in astrophysical phenomena. It covers toroidal confinement systems, internal MHD modes, small-scale MHD instabilities, MHD internal kink modes, MHD modes in collisionless and neoclassical regimes, drift-MHD modes, external kink modes, and Alfven eigenmodes.

Book Description
Magnetohydrodynamics, the study of the motion of electrically conducting fluids in magnetic fields, is an important area in plasma physics. The effects of instabilities in such electrical fluids are very difficult to calculate and this is the first book to deal with the subject as a whole in a detailed manner. MHD and Microinstabilities in Confined Plasma starts from first principles and builds up to a full understanding of MHD. It features a number of topics not covered in other books on plasma, including non-linear theory, anomalous transport and magnetic reconnection.

Book Description
This invaluable book provides a basic introduction to plasma equilibrium, particle orbits, transport, and those ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamic instabilities which dominate the behavior of toroidal magnetically confined plasmas, and to develop the mathematical methods necessary for their theoretical analysis. The book deals primarily with the consequences of ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics, these theories being responsible for most of what is well understood regarding the physics of fusion oriented discharges.

Book Description
The purpose of this assessment of the fusion energy sciences program of the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Science is to evaluate the quality of the research program and to provide guidance for the future program strategy aimed at strengthening the research component of the program. The committee focused its review of the fusion program on magnetic confinement, or magnetic fusion energy (MFE), and touched only briefly on inertial fusion energy (IFE), because MFE-relevant research accounts for roughly 95 percent of the funding in the Office of Science's fusion program. Unless otherwise noted, all references to fusion in this report should be assumed to refer to magnetic fusion. Fusion research carried out in the United States under the sponsorship of the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) has made remarkable strides over the years and recently passed several important milestones. For example, weakly burning plasmas with temperatures greatly exceeding those on the surface of the Sun have been created and diagnosed. Significant progress has been made in understanding and controlling instabilities and turbulence in plasma fusion experiments, thereby facilitating improved plasma confinement-remotely controlling turbulence in a 100-million-degree medium is a premier scientific achievement by any measure. Theory and modeling are now able to provide useful insights into instabilities and to guide experiments. Experiments and associated diagnostics are now able to extract enough information about the processes occurring in high-temperature plasmas to guide further developments in theory and modeling. Many of the major experimental and theoretical tools that have been developed are now converging to produce a qualitative change in the program's approach to scientific discovery. The U.S. program has traditionally been an important source of innovation and discovery for the international fusion energy effort. The goal of understanding at a fundamental level the physical processes governing observed plasma behavior has been a distinguishing feature of the program.

Book Description
This book describes the ideal magnetohydrodynamic theory for magnetically conned fusion plasmas. Advanced topics are presented in attempting to fill the gap between the up-to-date research developments and plasma physics textbooks. Nevertheless, they are self contained and trackable with the mathematical treatments detailed and underlying physics explained. Both analytical theories and numerical schemes are given. Besides the current research developments in this field, the future prospects are also discussed. Nowadays, it is believed that, if the ideal MHD theory predicts major instabilities, none of the magnetic confinements of fusion plasmas can survive. The author has also written the book Advanced Tokamak Stability Theory. In view of its importance, the MHD theory is further systematically elaborated in this book. The conventional ideal MHD framework is reviewed together with the newly developed multi-parallel-fluid MHD theory. The MHD equilibrium theory and code are described with the non-letter-'X' separatrix feature pointed out. The continuum modes, quasi-modes, phase mixing, and Alfven resonance heating are analysed. The analytical theories for MHD stability in tokamak configurations are systematically presented, such as the interchange, peeling, ballooning, toroidal Alfven modes, and kink type of modes. The global stability computations are also addressed, including resistive wall modes, error-field amplifications, and Alfven modes, etc.

Book Description
Handbook on Plasma Instabilities, Volume 2 consists of four chapters on plasma instabilities. Chapter 14 discusses the various aspects of microinstabilities. Beam-plasma systems are covered in Chapter 15, while the various stabilization methods are presented in Chapter 16. This book concludes with deliberations on parametric effects in Chapter 17. Other topics discussed include the microinstabilities of a homogeneous unmagnetized plasma; kinetic theory of macroscopic instabilities; basic beam physics; and beam-plasma instabilities. The magnetic field configuration stabilization; macroscopic nonmagnetic stabilization methods; parametric instabilities in homogeneous unmagnetized plasmas; and parametric effects in bounded and inhomogeneous plasmas are also elaborated in this text. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on unstable plasma.
