Social Sciences in Sport
Author: Joseph Maguire
Publisher: Human Kinetics
ISBN: 1492582573
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
Social Sciences in Sport presents discipline-specific knowledge in the social sciences, which aids in understanding the problems and potential of contemporary sport practices and experiences. This interdisciplinary reference provides in-depth coverage of sport studies and 14 social sciences, drawing connections across these disciplines to illuminate key issues and illustrate possibilities for change. Written by leading figures in the social sciences, the book synthesizes theory and research in social science and sport into four distinct areas: • Identity, which discusses individual development and ethical considerations from history, philosophy, and psychology • Community, which considers anthropology, sociology, geography, and media studies when looking at sport in social groups • Capital, which draws research in status, wealth, power, and resources from economics, political science, and international relations • Governance, which discusses the enhancement of sport through law, social policy, management studies, and education Organized around these topics into four parts, this reference places sport in the broader social sciences, showing where researchers in kinesiology and other disciplines can augment their knowledge base. Noting the range of issues and concerns in today’s sport environment, readers will analyze the potential of a human development model in sport studies. Editor Joseph Maguire and an esteemed team of contributors present the evolution of sport in various social sciences. A stage-setting introduction explains the relevance of a social scientific perspective on sport and physical activity, and part introductions outline many relationships between the social sciences and sport. Chapters include a historical overview of the discipline or subject area, the core concepts and main theoretical perspectives in that area of expertise, critical findings, and the contemporary debates that characterize sport. Equipped with the social scientific knowledge and new perspectives from this essential collection, students and practitioners will be able to navigate classic and emerging issues in sport. Whether readers are social scientists considering sport as a subject of study or sport studies scholars attempting to make connections with the broader disciplines, Social Sciences in Sport promotes development of and through sport.

Insight
Author: Bob Walker
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1644926911
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 112
Book Description
Starting at a young age, looking at events and circumstances as something to be developed and/or expanded to learn from, even if negative in nature, to please or attract others was a priority in life. My mother emphasized God's love and presence in our lives and that when strength was needed it was there we could look and reach out for it. Creating backyard rides in a wagon attached to a lawnmower as an event and renting books I saw in the house not being used, my mind was always focused on the "What else can be developed?" to enhance and improve the time, place, or situation. Life's challenges began in earnest when the accidental death of my wife and unborn child were killed in an automobile accident at my age twenty-five. From there I began to look for help in coping from my "best friend" for that purpose: alcohol. This helped for a temporary dulling of my senses but became a much too important part of my life. Through many years of finding a way to help others in business and achieving many goals and successes, this friend was always there. Eventually, this changed from friend to a disease, and one that challenged me further, even though at a significant time in my life (early retirement from a national company), I ceased this friendship and rose to other many new opportunities. After ten years of sobriety I was celebrating the successes of new business developments and expanded opportunities when I brought my friend back with a toast of one glass of wine, and life was turned upside down. Two years of that produced a loss of all I had gained materially, but a path to understanding my friend was a disease and have been able to protect myself from the disease, and continue after twelve plus years of sobriety to look to help others facing their challenges from this and how to find their opportunities.

Sport
Author: Jay Schulkin
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 023154197X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 245
Book Description
Sports are as varied as the people who play them. We run, jump, and swim. We kick, hit, and shoot balls. We ride sleds in the snow and surf in the sea. From the Olympians of ancient Greece to today's professional athletes, from adult pickup soccer games to children's gymnastics classes, people at all levels of ability at all times and in all places have engaged in sport. What drives this phenomenon? In Sport, the neuroscientist Jay Schulkin argues that biology and culture do more than coexist when we play sports—they blend together seamlessly, propelling each other toward greater physical and intellectual achievement. To support this claim, Schulkin discusses history, literature, and art—and engages philosophical inquiry and recent behavioral research. He connects sport's basic neural requirements, including spatial and temporal awareness, inference, memory, agency, direction, competitive spirit, and endurance, to the demands of other human activities. He affirms sport's natural role as a creative evolutionary catalyst, turning the external play of sports inward and bringing insight to the diversion that defines our species. Sport, we learn, is a fundamental part of human life.

Towards a Social Science of Drugs in Sport
Author: Jason Mazanov
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317984536
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 386
Book Description
The debate around the role of drugs in sport is vibrant. There is a wealth of evidence from the hard end of science, telling us how drugs work, how drug testing works, and how many athletes have fallen foul of the system. The evidence from social science is still building momentum. For example, what makes an athlete use a performance enhancing substance? "To win" simply fails to explain the drug use behaviour we see among athletes. This book provides a foundation for anyone trying to understand the drugs in sport problem beyond the hard science by looking at the "people factor" from different perspectives. After building a case for the social science of drugs in sport, it is examined from the ethical, sociological, economic, legal and psychological points of view. The book concludes with a definitive statement about what researchers, policy makers, sports administrators, athletes and fans can do to achieve a social science of drugs in sport that puts people firmly in the centre of the debate. This volume was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
