Book Description
In New Mobilities: Smart Planning for Emerging Transportation Technologies, transportation expert Todd Litman examines 12 emerging transportation modes and services that are likely to significantly affect our lives: bike- and carsharing, micro-mobilities, ridehailing and micro-transit, public transit innovations, telework, autonomous and electric vehicles, air taxis, mobility prioritization, and logistics management. Public policies around New Mobilities can either help create heaven, a well-planned transportation system that uses new technologies intelligently, or hell, a poorly planned transportation system that is overwhelmed by conflicting and costly, unhealthy, and inequitable modes. His expert analysis will help planners, local policymakers, and concerned citizens to make informed choices about the New Mobility revolution.

Book Description
The series of Interdisciplinary Conferences on Production, Logistics and Traffic (ICPLT) address the research community as well as practitioners in these fields with special attention to links and interfaces between the three disciplines. The fourth ICPLT in particular deals with technology from intralogistics to automated trucking driving as well as the societal aspects of commercial transport. To contribute to a high-level and beneficial exchange between authorities in politics and municipalities with researchers and practitioners in production and logistics management the ICPLT has asked for contributions from the three disciplines to better understand innovative technologies, best practises and latest results. These contributions have been evaluated and selected based on a double-blind review process to become part of this book. It comprises 21 contributions examining trends and challenges for commercial transport as the essential link for production, logistics and society. Therefore, innovative technologies and strategies are presented and discussed to better understand the interdependencies, conflicts of interest and to develop feasible solutions. Topics · Simulation & Optimization in Production and Logistics · Freight Transport Demand Modelling · Intralogistics & Logistics Facilities · Policy & Human Factors · Production & Maintenance · Supply Chain Management · Sustainable Logistics & Energy Target Groups · Representatives of public authorities, municipalities & politics · Actors of sectoral, transport & spatial planning · Actors of production & logistics · Researchers in the disciplines production, logistics, transport & spatial planning

Book Description
The Technological Innovation System (TIS) framework is used in this dissertation to examine emerging passenger electric vehicle (EV) markets in different countries and regions, as well as the development zero emission (ZE) drayage truck technologies. TIS provides a holistic approach to assessing the market development and diffusion of new technologies, and is often used to inform policy interventions related to a specific technology. Based on the TIS case studies presented in Chapters 3-7 recommendations are developed for policymakers interested in supporting passenger EV markets and the development of ZE drayage truck technologies. Theoretical and methodological contributions to the TIS framework are also developed.

Book Description
Long hours, low wages, and unsafe workplaces characterized sweatshops a hundred years ago. These same conditions plague American trucking today. Sweatshops on Wheels: Winners and Losers in Trucking Deregulation exposes the dark side of government deregulation in America's interstate trucking industry. In the years since deregulation in 1980, median earnings have dropped 30% and most long-haul truckers earn less than half of pre-regulation wages. Work weeks average more than sixty hours. Today, America's long-haul truckers are working harder and earning less than at any time during the last four decades. Written by a former long-haul trucker who now teaches industrial relations at Wayne State University, Sweatshops on Wheels raises crucial questions about the legacy of trucking deregulation in America and casts provocative new light on the issue of government deregulation in general.

Book Description
This research sought to evaluate the broad impacts that automated and connected vehicle technologies can have on both the motor carrier and rail industries. Since the development and adoption of these technologies are likely to be gradual, three phases were posited and analyzed. Depending on the degree of autonomy that is available, the motor carrier industry could achieve up to a 42.1% reduction in average cost per mile. And if fully autonomous technology was made available for use in the motor carrier industry, it is estimated that the American rail freight industry could see a 19% to 45% drop in demand.

Book Description
Although technology innovation, service innovation, and mobile apps have been studied respectively by scholars from diverse business domains, they are seldom explored together in the supply chain management context. Utilizing mobile app innovation events in the transportation and logistics industry, this three-essay dissertation empirically uncovers the impacts of innovative technologies and services in supply chain via mobile apps. The first essay explores the impacts of the implementing airlines' introduction of in-app baggage tracking function on their baggage-handling performance and on that of the non-implementing airlines. The second essay studies the influences of the emergence of digital freight matching (DFM) apps in the U.S. on the profitability and stock performance of traditional freight arrangement companies and large trucking companies that received distinct types of competition from DFM apps. The third essay investigated the spillover effects of the DFM app market prosperity in trucking on the air freight segment, through the lens of substitution and complementation logic, considering the inherent competition and coordination relationships of air-truck. Each essay adopts multi-methods and multi-data sources, finding evidence that app-related supply chain innovations affect the financial and/or operational performance of various supply chain parties differently. The dissertation contributes to multiple literature streams and generates implications for diverse stakeholders in the increasingly competitive and innovative supply chain environment.
