Book Description
Excerpt from Injuries of Nerves and Their Treatment This manual is intended as a guide to the examination and treatment of cases of nerve injury. While including all that the author believes to be essential to this, it does not claim to be an exhaustive account of the subject. A large proportion of the material used has appeared in papers published in 'Brain' (with Dr. Head), in the 'British Medical Journal, ' 'Clinical Journal, ' and 'Lancet.' The illustrations are, with three exceptions, original. Of these three, two are modified from illustrations given by Cushing, one from a diagram in a paper by Morriston Davies. The photographs have been taken by Mr. Wilson, photographer at the London Hospital, to whom my thanks are due. Book Description
Excerpt from Injuries and Diseases of Nerves: And Their Surgical Treatment It is now about nine years since, when House Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, I first had the opportunity of treating some patients with wounded nerves. The cases interested me, for I found that but little was at that time known of the prognosis or clinical course of injuries of nerves. The treatment by suture was then in its infancy, and the results obtained by this method had not been ascertained. I therefore determined to try and obtain for myself the answers to problems which were not yet solved, and, as a result, the present work has gradually developed. In it are included the Jacksonian Prize Essay of the Royal College of Surgeons for the year 1882, and the Astley Cooper Prize Essay for the year 1886. The book may indeed be said to be merely a condensation of the latter essay, with the addition of such further knowledge as I have gained during the last three years. A portion of the following pages has also appeared in the Lancet for 1887, in the form of Lectures delivered at the royal College of Surgeons in that year. The work throughout has been done entirely from a clinical aspect, and whatever value it may possess is due to the fact that large numbers of patients suffering from nerve injuries of the most various kinds have been kept under constant observation for many years. I do not think that the practice of any one surgeon could have afforded a sufficient field for observation, but, fortunately for my purposes, I have been attached to a large hospital into which many and various accidents are yearly admitted, and in which my opportunities for clinical study have been practically inexhaustible. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatment of Injuries of the Peripheral Spinal Nerves IN the following monograph an attempt is made to place at the disposal of the general surgeon, who may be called on to deal with an occasional case of peripheral nerve injury, the experience which has been gathered from the exceptionally abundant material provided by the Great War. It is hoped to map out for the surgeon who has no special experience of the subject those paths which will lead to a successful result for himself and his patient and to help him to avoid those pitfalls which have entrapped most workers at first, before they learned to look out for them. Book Description
Excerpt from Injuries of Nerves: And Their Consequences English medical literature contains no complete trea tise on injuries of nerves and the diseases consequent upon them. In fact, few persons have at any time in medical history been so situated as to command the peculiar opportunity which has fallen to the lot of the writer of these pages, and which alone he feels may justify him in adding another to the numerous monographs which to-day claim the attention of the profession. In May, 1868, Dr. Wm. A. Hammond, then Surgeon General of the U. S. Army, requested me to share with Dr. George Morehouse the medical charge of an army hospital for nervous diseases, the foundation of which I had suggested to the medical bureau, over which at that time Dr. Hammond presided with such ability as has caused his name to be inseparably associated with the medical and surgical history of the late civil war. Two of these are from the publications of others, but are given for their peculiar interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
