Book Description
This Research Document describes the current state of knowledge of the biology, ecology, distribution, population trends, habitat requirements, and threats to Silver Shiner. Mitigation measures and alternative activities related to the identified threats, which can be used to protect the species, are also presented. The information contained in the RPA and this document may be used to inform the development of recovery documents and for assessing permits, agreements and related conditions, as per section 73, 74, 75, 77 and 78 of SARA. The scientific information also serves as advice to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada regarding the listing of the species under SARA and is used when analyzing the socio-economic impacts of adding the species to the list as well as during subsequent consultations, where applicable. This assessment considers the available scientific data with which to assess the recovery potential of Silver Shiner in Canada.--Document.

Book Description
Silver Shiner (Notropis photogenis) was assessed in May 2011 as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). There are four separate populations (little to no mixing of individuals) of Silver Shiner in Canada. These will be referred to as the Grand River population, the Thames River population, the Bronte Creek population, and the Sixteen Mile Creek population. There are three components to each RPA: an assessment of species status, the scope for recovery, and scenarios for mitigation and alternatives to activities. Here, we contribute to components two and three by identifying population sensitivity, and quantifying recovery targets, required habitat, current abundance, and risk of extinction, with associated uncertainty, for Canadian populations of Silver Shiner.--Document.

Book Description
"The Carmine Shiner (Notropis percobromus) was listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) as Threatened when the Act came into force in 2003. In April 2006, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) re-assessed and confirmed the designation because it occurs in an extremely restricted area of Manitoba and the major threat to the species is the alteration in water flow as a result of stream regulation. The Science sector in Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) was asked to undertake a Recovery Potential Assessment (RPA); this Research Document supports the RPA. It describes the current state of knowledge of Carmine Shiner in Manitoba in terms of their biology, ecology, abundance, distribution and trends, habitat requirements and threats. A recovery goal, mitigation measures and alternatives to threats and the potential for allowable harm are presented, as is information relevant to critical habitat and residence. The information contained in the RPA and this document may be used to inform the development of recovery documents and to support decision-making with regard to the issue of permits, agreements and related conditions under the SARA."--Document.

Book Description
Silver Shiner (Notropis photogenis), a species at risk in Canada, is listed as Special Concern under Schedule 3 of the Species at Risk Act and is assessed as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). The species is relatively understudied in Canada but is known to occur in four watersheds in southern Ontario: Sixteen Mile Creek; Bronte Creek; Grand River; and, Thames River. Sampling was conducted using a bag seine in each of the four watersheds to gain a better understanding of the types of habitats utilized by Silver Shiner. The objectives of this study are to determine Silver Shiner distribution and habitat preference throughout its Canadian range.--Document.
