Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, University of Ghana, Legon, language: English, abstract: In Ghana, information about social media influences on adolescent users' behaviour is dearth. Any empirical assessment of social media influences on adolescent mental health is largely lacking. Furthermore, there is limited or no policy or legal framework regarding access and use of social media platforms in Ghana. More so, most of the few empirical studies on social media usage in Ghana have focused on access, purpose, benefits and risks and impacts on academic performance of tertiary, secondary and basic school students. It is against this backdrop that the current study comes to examine the actual influences of social media on adolescent mental health and overall policy implications in Ghana. The researcher examines the trend in social media use, the main impacts of social media use on adolescents and major influences of social media use on mental health of adolescents in Ghana. The study will contribute immensely to existing knowledge on social media use among Ghanaian youth. The results may also inform national policy on effective and responsible use of social media in order to mitigate associated risks of social media use on Ghanaian adolescents. Social media has become a common avenue for social networking in a virtual public, which allows people to create and consume their own information on any e-medium that sanctions social interfacing. It includes online platforms such as social networking, internet fora, blogs and microblogs, photo or video sharing media, crowdsourcing and virtual games. These media present both opportunities and challenges to users. The use of social media by especially adolescents may enhance communication and socialization, learning opportunities, and access to important health information. But it may also promote dissemination of inaccurate and misleading i

Book Description
The link between social media and mental health is gaining attention and has become a public health concern, especially for youth. The current systematic review aims to better understand factors that influence the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents, The research involved the use of databases; Medline, PsycINFO, SSCI, CINAHL, and Embase. Inclusion criteria for the literature review included peer-reviewed articles that measured social media use among youth and that had outcomes variables related to psychological health problems like anxiety, mental distress or depression. As such, from a total of 3,307 unique articles found,14 studies qualified, where 13 of them were transverse study. Four themes were identified: (1) Time spent on social media, (2) Type of social media activity, (3) Personal investment, and (4) Addiction. The review showed a connection between all the themes to mental health problems. Nonetheless, some limitations exist because of methodological restrictions of transverse study design, sampling, and measures. Future research on the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents (i.e., depression, anxiety, and psychological distress) should include qualitative methods, along with longitudinal study designs.

Book Description
Mental health disorders and suicide rates are at an all-time high in adolescents aged 11-19. In addition to the increase in mental health disorders, there has been a massive increase in adolescents using social media platforms. With the proliferation of social media, it is necessary to determine the effects it is having on adolescent users to determine if this could be a cause of increasing issues with mental health. As mental health in adolescents deteriorates and social media use rises, it's possible they may be correlated with one another. This study aims to find out if social media frequency and mental health are associated. The study was conducted using quantitative research with primary data collected via survey. The participants and setting included Adolescents ages (11-19) enrolled in an after school program and have voluntarily opted into the study with parent permission. Data collection was implemented through a single survey which includes questions on mental health and social media use. The analytic approach used was Quantitative research analyzed using SPSS. The Budget and Resource Management was self-funded and conducted. The study found that 31% of adolescent participants had differing levels of possible depression. Additionally, the study found that 88.1% of participants had some form of social media, and 69% of participants spent more than 2 hours a day on social media. However, the study results failed to reject the null hypothesis such that, for this study, social media's effect on mental health was not significant. The study suggests no correlation between those who use social media more frequently and those who struggle with mental health. With the proliferation of social media, it is still vital for research and advocacy on social media use and mental health disorders.
