Book Description
The mechanics of fracture and fatigue have produced a huge body of research work in relation to applications to metal materials and structures. However, a variety of non-metallic materials (e.g., concrete and cementitious composites, rocks, glass, ceramics, bituminous mixtures, composites, polymers, rubber and soft matter, bones and biological materials, and advanced and multifunctional materials) have received relatively less attention, despite their attractiveness for a large spectrum of applications related to the components and structures of diverse engineering branches, applied sciences and architecture, and to the load-carrying systems of biological organisms. This book covers the broad topic of structural integrity of non-metallic materials, considering the modelling, assessment, and reliability of structural elements of any scale. Original contributions from engineers, mechanical materials scientists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians are presented, applying both experimental and theoretical approaches.
Influence of Loading Sequence on Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Normal Weight Concrete Under Direct Tension
Author: Xudong Chen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Concrete
Languages : en
Pages : 18
Book Description
Under seismic action, concrete can be considered to be subjected to multistage constant cyclic loads. Moreover, the failure of concrete is predominantly manifested in cracking caused by tension. This article studies the dynamic mechanical properties of concrete specimens under direct cyclic tension. According to the experimental results, this article discusses selections of damage parameters and the establishment of the evolution model on the basis of elastic modulus degradation and plastic strain accumulation. According to reasonable damage parameters, the damage evolution mechanism is investigated to propose a modified model, by which the failure process and the fatigue life of concrete under cyclic loading can be predicted. Additionally, the proposed damage evolution model is used to analyze the experimental data of the related literature and this study, which both turn out a good match in the prediction.

Fatigue of Reinforced Concrete
Author: G. P. Mallett
Publisher: Stationery Office Books (TSO)
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
Over the past 20 years, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has carried out a co-ordinated programme of fatigue testing, including work on the fatigue performance of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete beams. The research has led to a better understanding of the fatigue behaviour of plain concrete, the various types of reinforcing bars in air and concrete, continuous welded, lapped and coupled bars, and the effects of corrosion. The work of TRRL and many other organizations is reviewed and a summary of current design rules with recommendations for assessing the fatigue life of new structures in service is given.
