Invisible Factories
Author: Lauren A. Benton
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791496368
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Invisible Factories analyzes the role of the informal economy in national development and weighs alternative claims about its impact on industrial development. Detailed case studies of the electronics and shoe industries in Spain demonstrate the restructuring process. Benton examines the transformation of ideas about work and gender, the shifting lines of conflict between workers and employers, and growing tensions between national and regional interests. She shows that these elements of the workplace and national politics, rather than the logic of economic development, command the new industrial order. Benton asks how decentralization of production has affected workers, industrial growth, and the recasting of industrial policy. Explored in depth are the plight of women outworkers, the history of regional labor conflicts, and the evolution of national-level bargaining among unions, employers, and the state.

The Integration of Spain in the European Union
Author: Rafael L Myro
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The paper evaluates the different effects of European integration on Spanish industry. Up to the present time foreign industrial trade has increased noticeably, rapidly reaching the level of the other European countries. This has been highly beneficial to the Spanish economy, involving intense trade creation and the absence of significant trade deviation. To confront the external challenge, firms have clearly changed their technical and corporate organization, through a process of technical transformation, mergers and internationalization that have improved the quality of products and raised productivity. Inflows of foreign direct investment have substantially helped this transformation. As a consequence of these developments, Spanish industry has higher levels of growth and more rapid increases in exports than any other country in the European Union. Industrial policy has become very similar to that of the other European countries, following a process begun prior to 1986, the date Spain joined the European Union. Key Words: Integration Economics, European Union, International Economics, Manufacturing sector.

The Economic Modernization of Spain, 1830-1930
Author: Nicolás Sánchez-Albornoz
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780814779231
Category : Spain
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
Those readers with some understanding of how the world economy has radically changed since the Industrial Revolution will probably find that a great deal of their information will most likely be based on how the leading economies performed during the process of change. In the tightening network of global economic interdependence it can also be important to be aware of the steps taken by smaller and initially less successful nations as they moved toward modernization, even when their arrival at full industrial transformation has been somewhat late. book that was first presented by historians meeting to discuss the structural transformation of the Spanish economy during the past two centuries. The approach is twofold, first along lines of major economic sectors and then according to major regions.

Spain
Author: Joseph Harrison
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131705167X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Perhaps more than any other European country, Spain has undergone a remarkable transformation in the post-war period. To the surprise of many, it has succeeded in making the leap from a predominantly agricultural and politically repressed country, to a modern European democracy with a diversified economy containing important manufacturing and service sectors. Yet, despite the fact that at the beginning of the twenty-first century Spain is the world's eighth largest economy, old stereotypes that see the Iberian nation as an inflexible, unchanging society, persist. As such, scholars will welcome this new study which challenges the picaresque and outdated notions of Spanish economic development, replacing them with a picture of rapid and profound modernization. Building upon the recent work of historians and economists, the authors provide a thoughtful and compelling overview of the subject that clearly elucidates both the positive and negative aspects of modern Spanish development. Thus, as well as charting the undoubted successes achieved, persistent problems - most notably high unemployment - are also explored. Written in a straightforward and engaging manner, this book engages with research from a wide variety of disciplines, and will be of interest to anyone with a specific interest in modern Spain, or a wider interest in economic development within the framework of the European Union.
