Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Problems There are few of our citizens but realize that there is much that is wrong in matters industrial, many things that should and must be remedied. They know that we are facing serious economic problems; but they do not know either the nature or the scope of those problems. Then it follows that they do not know that those problems have a common origin and therefore a common solution. To teach that lesson is the chief mission of this work. Book Description
Excerpt from American Industrial Problems There is a freemasonry in American business peculiar to the country. It draws all the dif ferent branches of trade together, and renders them helpful to each other. Everything, even the churches, is conducted on business lines. There is no institution, local or national, which is not imbued with a commercial Spirit. The whole Republic, from the White House down ward, lives in a commercial atmosphere. All its parts move together with a kindred impulse. Hence the rapidity of its movements. In a few months it shoots up from a slough of despond into blazing prosperity. Sometimes it falls back just as quickly, but even then there is comfort and consolation for the Americans in the fact that they have all fallen together. Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Problems and Disputes IN publishing this work, I have no ambition to be a prophet of the future relations between Capital and Labour, but to state, however imperfectly, facts within my own knowledge, with some views upon certain of the problems which have arisen. These facts may help in some small measure to throw light upon events of the present day and the problem of industrial peace. We have no guide to the future except our experience of the past. I would like to record my gratitude to the staff who worked so hard and loyally with me for long years and through the War - men and women. Mr. I. Haig Mitchell and Mr. D. Cummings, as chief lieutenants, with Mr. Sidney Clarke, my first private secretary, and Mr. H. J. Wilson, who succeeded him, worked with me through many strenuous days, of which these pages give some record. There are, too, many conciliators and arbitrators, men like Sir W. W. Mackenzie, Sir William Robinson, the late Mr. T. Smith, and Professor J. B. Baillie, as well as my colleagues on the Committee on Production, who have given unwearying service to the cause of industrial peace. I should add that Professor Baillie materially aided me with the chapters on Socialism and Syndicalism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Organisation: As Applied to Industrial Problems Great Britain reached its proud position as the Premier Nation of the World in times when Trade and Commerce were undeveloped. Therefore, all that was necessary for success at that time was enterprise and love of adventure. In later days, other Nations entered the field, and profiting by England's mistakes - mistakes inseparable from Pioneer work - were able to commence with a very great additional advantage. Competition is now World-wide, and the only way which Great Britain can increase or even maintain her position is by adopting more scientific methods when conducting Financial, Commercial, and Technical Trade. This truism is fully recognised on all hands. The direction, however, in which a considerable difference of opinion arises is in deciding what methods should be employed. Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Tangles: Industrial Problems Explained Through Lessons Drawn From Passing Events Economic Tangles is printed with no expectation that there is any widespread demand for the book, but because many friends and acquaintances interested in these subjects have suggested the possibility of its being a help to lucid thinking on economic subjects. If it does this in ever so small a measure, it will not have been issued in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Problems of Modern Industry The authors of these studies had not contemplated reprinting them. But there continues to be a demand for them, even after a couple of decades; and it seems ungracious to let them go out of print, imperfect as they are. We therefore reissue them uniform, not only with our Industrial Democracy, in which the theory and practice of Trade Unions is analysed in detail, but also with our History of Trade Unionism, in the revised and greatly enlarged edition, in which the story is brought down to 1920. It is interesting, at least to the authors, to trace in these essays of the nineteenth century the forecasts of the solutions which the twentieth century is accepting. With regard to Women's Wages, dealt with in Chapter III., the reader may be referred to the elaborate Report of the War Cabinet Committee on Women in Industry, 1919; and especially to the Minority Report by one of ourselves, which has been separately published under the title of Men's and Women's Wages: Should they be Equal? Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Problems of an Industrial Civilization This is the second in a series of books by Professor Elton Mayo, now planned to be three in number. Jointly they will present Selected aspects of over a quarter century of clinical research in industry. This research has been carried on in an effort to get a better and more fundamental understanding of human relations - that most neglected of subjects - and how to improve them. These books present also Mayo's mature reflections based on long self-training and clinical experience with individuals in a great variety of social environments before he began the study of men and women in industry: AS a result of his earlier work, when he turned his attention to industry he brought 'to his studies, zfirst, intimate, habitual, intuitive familiarity vrith things; secondly, systematic knowledge of things; and thirdly, a useful way of thinking about things, which the late Lawrence J. Henderson considered the basic necessities for objective clinical study of a new field. For about Menty years Mayo has been senior professor in the Department of Industrial Research in the Harvard Business School. The research conducted by this Department, by him and his co-workers in industry and in the School, has always been firsthand, clinical studies-of concrete industrial situations. The history of this twenty-year program has been a history of steadily increasing insight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But this is done with a purpose. We are trying to reach the masses and not all are as capable of seeing as others. If any, then, should think us over-careful in our efforts to be clear, we hope they will over look it. We may not be for some.
