Book Description
Excerpt from Inauguration of Edward G. Beckwith: President of the Oahu College, at the Court House, Honolulu, September 25, 1854 I am requested, as a member of the board of Trustees of the institution whose interests have called us together, to make a few explanatory remarks in regard to it; in order that the exercises which are to follow may be listened to with a more full understanding of the causes which have operated to bring it to its present condition. The Punahou School had its origin in the wants of the children connected with the families of the American Mission on these islands. Those wants began to to be felt and even to press heavily on the minds of parents at a very early period of their residence here. Burdened as they were with care and labor for the people, it was impossible for them to devote that attention to their own children which was necessary to fit them for the duties of life without serious detriment to the great work in which they were engaged. To send them far off, to the land of their fathers for education, at a tender age, when they were old enough to require regular instruction, was both unnatural and inexpressibly painful; yet, for many years, it was endured, rather than see their children grow up around them uneducated, and perhaps little elevated above the natives they came to teach. Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900
Author: David W. Forbes
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 9780824825034
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 760
Book Description
Compiled and annotated by David W. Forbes Volume 3 comprises entries recording the last years of the rule of Kamehameha III, the reigns of Kamehameha IV, Kamehameha V, and Lunalilo, and the first seven years of the Kalakaua era. During this period government was firmly established as a constitutional monarchy; the 1864 constitution of Kamehameha V increased the power of the monarch and remained in effect until 1887. Following the successful negotiation by the Kalakaua government of a reciprocity treaty with the United States in 1875, Hawai'i experienced great prosperity. At the same time, however, it came under increasing economic and social domination by American interests. As in the first two volumes, all books, pamphlets, single-sheet publications, and significant periodical articles have been included. Extensive annotations describe the more than 1,200 works listed, and the exact title, date of publication, size of the volume, collation of pages, number and type of plates and maps, references, and location of copies are given for each publication.
