Aujourd'hui, toute organisation est appelée à mener un management efficace de l'environnement. La mise en place du système management environnemental (SME) selon la norme ISO 14001 est basée sur la méthodologie d'amélioration (PDCA) et commence principalement par une analyse environnementale. Les aspects environnementaux dans ce cas ont été étudiés en tenant compte des conditions de fonctionnement (normales ou anormales) et des domaines environnementaux (air, eau, ressources naturelles) en utilisant la notion de processus. L'analyse du bilan matière de chaque activité, sous-activité et service a permis d'identifier les aspects environnementaux. Leur criticité a été plus élevée pour les aspects environnementaux significatifs (AES), ce qui a permis aussi d'étudier leur degré de maîtrise. Ceci se traduit par la possibilité d'établir un programme environnemental qui tient compte des aspects environnementaux significatifs non maîtrisés alors que les aspects maîtrisés subissent seulement la surveillance et mesurage. Une sensibilisation concernant les AES apparaît comme ayant un effet positif sur l'efficacité du SME envisagé.
