Book Description
This report is a literature review concerning the impacts of flooding regime modification on bottomland hardwood forest wildlife habitats of the lower Mississippi Valley. Documented effects on forest vegetation and wildlife populations are described. The composition and structure of the bottomland are an important determinant of the quality and type of wildlife habitat available. These forest characteristics are, in turn, largely influenced by the flooding regime. In general, overstory diversity and perennial understory diversity and productivity are lowest in near-permanently flooded habitats and increase in areas flooded less frequently and for shorter periods of time. Nonflooded areas are often, but not always, less diverse and productive than infrequently flooded areas. A permanent change in flooding regime is likely to cause a gradual change in composition and structure, resulting in forest characteristics similar to those normally found under such hydrologic conditions. Tree growth, regional habitat diversity, and land clearance patterns may also be influenced by modifications to the hydrologic regime.

Book Description
This timely book is a "must-have" for anyone involved with wetland conservation, in particular bottomland hardwood forests, a habitat in which over 50% of our nation's inventory has been destroyed. Authored by recognized experts, the book thoroughly covers the ecological processes in bottomland hardwood forests and relates these processes to human activities. Chapters include original research into ecological processes, discuss impacts of human activities on flood plain ecosystems, and examine human perceptions of bottomland values and management strategies for ecosystem restoration and conservation. The book focuses on impact assessment and management, featuring local sites and ecosystems, as well as the processes in larger areas, such as watersheds and hydrological basins.

Book Description
Water tables are expected to rise somewhat in the vicinity of planned impoundments along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Where permanent flooding of timber is anticipated, tree mortality is expected and has been accounted for in the project planning process. However, where water table levels will be raised significantly but permanent flooding does not occur, the effects on forests are very unclear. This report identifies factors that may be pertinent in assessing this type of impact. The information presented here has been drawn from the scientific literature on species flood tolerance and related topics that provide insight on potential water table effects. This review concentrates on induced mortality and changes in growth rates of mature trees. (Author).
