Articles in this volume focus on the impact of rural development policies and projects on demographic behaviour in seven countries in Asia and Latin America. The Phillipines study examines changes over time in two rural communities in Southern Mindanao influenced by the Green Revolution and agrarian reform. The Malaysian project investigates the impact of modern industrial expansion in a traditional rural area upon the family economy and gender roles. In Bangladesh, the effect of an integrated program for rural development upon demographic change, especially on fertility and family-planning behaviour, is examined. The Indian study focuses on the relationship between child labour and fertility in a village where jewelry-making is an important cottage industry. In rural Colombia, demographic and economic behaviour are compared in three different economic sectors. The Argentinian study investigates the demographic and economic characteristics of households belonging to different agricultural sectors of a relatively underdeveloped province. Finally, in Peru, demographic and economic behaviour in four rural areas, characterized by different levels of development, are compared.

Until the early to mid-1970s, social scientists in the fields of population and development were largely going their own ways. Demographers relied almost exclusively on demographic transition theory as their para digm for understanding the role of development in population change and fertility decline. Conversely, most development economists and other specialists were certainly aware of the constraints placed upon development objectives by population growth. However, the main de velopment theories paid little attention to population and the implica tions of population growth for development. Indeed it was not until after the World Population Conference in Bucharest in 1974 that the interaction of population and development became a serious and pur posive theme for social scientific study. Accordingly, since about the mid-1970s, an extensive literature in the field of population and develop ment has been generated. And in 1975, under the auspices of The Popu lation Council, the journal Population and Development Review was found ed, a journal which in the past decade has developed into the premier publication in the world for work in this area. But our understanding of development as it refers to change in Third World countries remained fragmented. Moreover, our understanding of the linkages and interac tions between population and development was very limited. It is in this regard that Ozzie Simmons's Perspectives on Development and Population Growth in the Third World will certainly have an impact.

This book is arranged and developed around the theme of “2050 China,” it analyzes the factors and advantages of the Chinese road to socialist modernization, explores and summarizes the development goal and the basic logic of the socialist modernization of China, and further shows the general basis of the primary stage of socialism. According to the report delivered at the 19th Party Congress, and according to the “two-stage” strategic plan, this book looks ahead in detail to the overarching objective and sub-objectives of essentially achieving socialist modernization by 2035, discusses the building of a great modern socialist country in all respects from the perspective of the Party’s six-sphere integrated plan of economic, political, cultural, social, ecological civilization, and national defense construction, and provides policy proposals.
