Book Description
This book is designed to re-establish the position of the oral cavity and its mucosa at the forefront of defence and maintenance of homeostatic mechanisms that protect against disease not just locally but also systemically. The oral mucosa is a unique collection of tissues that constitutes a highly active environment with its own unique microflora and homeostatic interaction with the innate and adaptive immune responses. As an immune tissue the oral mucosa was somewhat neglected in the past owing to the tendency to assume similarity to the gut mucosa. More recently it has become apparent that the oral mucosa is a complex environment and, like the esophageal mucosa, has more in common with vaginal tissue than with the gut. Furthermore, the ability of the oral mucosa to act as an immune inductive site has made it an attractive area of research in terms of desensitization for allergic reactions and possibly autoimmune responses. In this book, recognized experts in the field provide up-to-date coverage of all aspects of the structure and function of the oral mucosa, reflecting important recent advances in knowledge, including at the molecular level.

Book Description
The first International Conference on Oral Mucosal Immunity and Microbiome (OMIM) aimed to highlight cutting-edge basic and translational research from an oral immunological and microbiological perspective. Oral diseases with a microbial etiology are the most prevalent chronic diseases of humans. Whilst not life-threatening, they can significantly compromise quality of life, are associated with increased risk for certain systemic diseases, and pose heavy financial burdens to national health systems. Hence, periodontal and peri-implant diseases, dental caries, root canal infections and mucosal infections are significant global public health problems. In this book global experts summarize and discuss the latest progress made in oral mucosal immunity and the oral microbiome. Target audience is basic and/or translational researchers with expertise in host immunity and microbiome research, and interest in oral health and disease. This volume provides a much needed quantum leap in the field, by joining forces to address gaps at the oral mucosal immunity-microbiome cross-talk.

Book Description
The oral mucosa is a challenging environment from an immunological perspective, containing discrete niches with a unique architecture and function that requires precise adjustment of the immune system. Being the port of entry to the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, the oral cavity is also constantly challenged by antigens derived from air and food. Moreover, the oral cavity is the sole tissue of the body harboring a hard surface (i.e. the tooth) that is exposed to the hostile external environment, resulting in the formation of a complex biofilm that has local and systemic effects. To deal with such challenges, the oral immune system aims to prevent the invasion of pathogens/harmful antigens and to tolerate non-pathogenic counterparts in order to maintain homeostasis. In recent years, numerous studies have addressed these fundamental issues, revealing sophisticated mechanisms engaged by the immune system to maintain oral mucosal homeostasis and to combat various immunological insults. Some of these studies have identified novel immunological mechanisms, emphasizing the uniqueness of the oral immune system and the necessity to further investigate its functions.

Book Description
Researchers have recently made tremendous progress in the area of mucosal immunology, greatly increasing our understanding of the common mucosal immune system, mucosal infections, and oral immunization. However, thisresearch has not previously been made available in a single work. In its large 81/2"x 11"format, Handbook of Mucosal Immunology covers the entire spectrum of mucosal immunity and is organized in two main sections to present the basic biology of the common mucosal immune system and the immune responses of the mucosae. The first section provides an introduction and historical perspective of the mucosal immune system and includes comprehensive discussion of the development and physiology of mucosal defense. It discusses such topics as the structure and function of themucosal epithelium, characteristics of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), Peyers patches, and concepts of mucosal vaccines. The second section focuses on the secretory immune system with special reference to mucosal diseases in the digestive (GALT), respiratory (BALT), and genitourinary tracts. This information is especially important in light of the current interest in the mechanisms, transmission, and prevention of infectious diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, and tuberculosis.Virtually all chapters have been authored by the original investigators responsible for key observations on which current concepts are based. This handbook will be an invaluable resource for a diverse group of both researchers and practicing clinicians.Molecular biologists, immunologists, veterinarians, public health workers, physicians in specialties from pediatrics to pulmonology, and graduate students of mucosal immunology will all find this handbook the most complete work on the subject.
