In the European tradition, parliaments are central political institutions that play a crucial role in the development of democratic societies. No other institution regularly offers a public arena for open deliberation and dissent, for discussing opposite points of view and for reaching compromise solutions between political adversaries. I discorsi politici nel Bundestag sono monologhi con intento persuasivo nei quali si fa un uso diffuso di domande retoriche e non-canoniche. Il valore retorico di una domanda è determinato da diversi fattori, tra cui il contesto comunicativo, gli elementi lessicali e la prosodia. Dopo aver discusso i primi due fattori, vengono analizzate in dettaglio la prosodia e le funzioni pragmatico-comunicative dell'intonazione. Il fulcro del libro è l'analisi prosodica di un corpus di domande non-canoniche che si suddivide in un'analisi percettiva preliminare e un'analisi acustica. Attraverso l'osservazione dei correlati acustici vengono messi in evidenza degli schemi intonativi ricorrenti. Questi schemi, comparati con altre realizzazioni standard, mostrano se e in che modo la prosodia contribuisce all'interpretazione del valore retorico delle domande.
