The circumstance of their forced migration situates that narrative squarely in relation to the Second World War in general, and the persecution of the Jews and the Holocaust in particular. Untimely death dominates the stories of many of these ancestors, relatives whom the brothers never knew. The chronicle of the extended European Dreyfus family provides a template for German Jewish history across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It includes rural Jews, people living in small towns or village communities, who were very different in outlook and lifestyle from those assimilated, secular, affluent, urban Jewish relatives who George remembers better. Using materials from George Dreyfus’s extensive personal archive and the collections of other family members, supplemented by the resources of the internet, the book aims to capture as much as is possible of the story of the European family for the sake of the generations to come, since such history can be so quickly and easily forgotten. In Jewish culture, remembering is a duty, a collective responsibility, a mitzvah, even when – as in this book – remembering is discomforting and confronting. The Dreyfus family as it survives and thrives in the world today has been shaped by one inescapable fact: those who did not leave Germany and Europe by 1941 at the latest all died. Viewed more broadly, the European Dreyfus family provides a template for German-Jewish history across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It offers up two prototypes. On the one hand, we find families living in small towns or village communities, often engaged in small-scale commerce or working as itinerant agricultural middlemen, as horse-traders or cattle handlers. As emancipation and the removal of previous restrictions limiting the number of Jews in any town enabled Jews to migrate freely to cities in the second half of the nineteenth century, the urban Jew - the second prototype - became representative of German Jews in general: assimilated, secular, well-acquainted with German culture and with a greater degree of wealth and education than the average German, sharing many of the values of educated bourgeois Germans. These Jews were manufacturers, merchants and bankers. Photographs and descriptions of business premises, apartments and houses bear witness to the success and prosperity of these families in the years before the Third Reich, to a way of life and a culture that was irretrievably lost. The purpose of this chronicle is to capture as much as is possible of the rich story of the European family for the sake of the generations to come, since such history can be so quickly and easily forgotten. Pink Triangle Legacies traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge and emblem of discrimination into a widespread, recognizable symbol of queer activism, pride, and community. W. Jake Newsome provides an overview of the Nazis' targeted violence against LGBTQ+ people and details queer survivors' fraught and ongoing fight for the acknowledgement, compensation, and memorialization of LGBTQ+ victims. Within this context, a new generation of queer activists has used the pink triangle—a reminder of Germany's fascist past—as the visual marker of gay liberation, seeking to end queer people's status as second-class citizens by asserting their right to express their identity openly. The reclamation of the pink triangle occurred first in West Germany, but soon activists in the United States adopted this chapter from German history as their own. As gay activists on opposite sides of the Atlantic grafted pink triangle memories onto new contexts, they connected two national communities and helped form the basis of a shared gay history, indeed a new gay identity, that transcended national borders. Pink Triangle Legacies illustrates the dangerous consequences of historical silencing and how the incorporation of hidden histories into the mainstream understanding of the past can contribute to a more inclusive experience of belonging in the present. There can be no justice without acknowledging and remembering injustice. As Newsome demonstrates, if a marginalized community seeks a history that liberates them from the confines of silence, they must often write it themselves.

Plebiscites, or referendums, are epitomes of direct democracy and the right of self-determination. While direct democracy has always been a key subject in the theory and practice of western liberal democracies, the issue of self-determination has been propelled to the fore by the hegemonistic moves of Russia. By providing a historical analysis of the post-World War One plebiscites, this book deals with enduring, painfully contemporary, and in in any case fundamental, concepts. The contributors to this edited volume approach the referendums comparatively. After grounding the analysis theoretically, the authors look at detailed aspects of individual cases, with the two plebiscites held in the Danish-German border region of Schleswig in the winter of 1920 as points of departure. They then extend the exploration through the inter-war period and address the effects of border delimitations on everyday life or gender roles in the context of ethnic mobilization. Finally, the book places the post-World War One plebiscites in a long-term perspective. The concluding essays assess, among others, the applicability of plebiscitary solutions to contemporary conflicts, taking into consideration issues of borders, religion, language, identity, and minority rights.
