Book Description
Excerpt from Icenographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Vol. 1 of 4: Literature Art The object steadily kept in View in preparing the iconographic encyclopedia has been to furnish a book to which the general reader may apply, for an explanation of the principal physical facts which come under his notice. To do this satisfactorily, pictorial representation is necessary, which it is hoped the five hundred quarto plates, with their figures, will abundantly furnish. Much of the utility of an Encyclopaedia depends on its arrange. Ment. The method which the Editor's experience of works of this kind has shown to be most convenient, is that of a systematic grouping of distinct treatises, according to their natural affinities. The work thus becomes, as it were, a series of text-books, capable of being used as such, and to which recourse may be had for all the general information required on a given subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Iconographic Encyclopædia of Science, Literature, and Art, Vol. 1 of 4 Tables of Contents and Indexes have been prepared for each volume, and no pains have been spared to make these more than usually accurate. The indexes do not refer to words merely, but to facts and ideas, so that the text can be readily consulted upon any given topic. The lists of the figures on the plates will be found under the contents of the text which they are intended to elucidate, with references to the pages in the letter press Where explanations may be looked for. They furnish an immediate explanation of any figure that may arrest the eye.' A glossary of the German terms and phrases used in a few of the plates is also added to these lists. It would undoubtedly have been more convenient if the few plates which have caused the necessity of such translations, had been re-engraved in English;but the expense of doing so would have more than doubled the price of the work, whose unparalleled cheapness could only be secured by a liberal contract for impressions from the excellent German plates. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book Description
"The 500 plates presented here were first published in 1844 by Brockhaus in Leipzig. Robert Garrigue of New York published the first English edition in 1851 entitled Iconographic Encyclopedia of Science, Literature and Art. Since that time this unique compendium has become a standard of illustration worldwide. The book has been published in numerous editions and has been sold millions of copies around the world. The present issue is the first in hardcover in many years, with all plates carefully restored. Never before have the plates about sciences, arts, daily life, culture and war, nature and history, costumes and behavior have been printed so precisely and legibly."
