Ice Flow and Blockage Investigation of Shrouded Propellers
Author: V. Laskow
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ice mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 640
Book Description
Description of a series of model tests and analytical investigations of ice flow and blockage of shrouded propellers. The tests were done using a 1:15 scale model of the Louis S. St. Laurent equipped with a centreline nozzle. Tests performed included ice block buoyancy tests, friction tests, waterjet tests, overload tests with and without an ice deflector, simulated blockage tests, wing shaft interference tests, and broken ice flow tests, with and without the deflector. The influence of ship speed, draft, power and other parameters on ice-propeller interaction frequency and blockage frequency was established. Blockage forces were determined as a function of blocking piece geometry, power developed and direction of motion. The effectiveness of waterjets and ice deflectors is discussed, along with the various means of minimizing blockage severity.

Effects of Ice Blockage Size and Proximity on Propeller Performance During Non-contact Propeller-ice Interaction

Book Description
"A series of tests on a model of the ice class fixed pitch propeller of the Canadian Coast Guard's R-Class icebreakers were conducted in the towing tank at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Performance of the propeller was assessed in both uniform flow and in blocked flow behind a nearby simulated ice piece for two blockage configurations and a range of clearances between the block and the propeller blades. Measurements of thrust and torque were made over a range of speeds. The results help to isolate the separate effects of the extreme wake within which the propeller operates, and of proximity of the ice piece. The work forms part of a broader research effort examining the performance of propellers when blocked with ice"--Leaf [1].
