Book Description
Excerpt from I. Prose Works; II. Poetical Works To this, and other attacks Of the Puritan writers, Bishops hall and usher soon after replied; the first in An humble Remonstrance to the High Court Of Parliament, and the last in The Apostolical Institution of Episcopacy. MIL ton had commenced the controversy, and he did not shrink from its prosecution. He thought that on subjects to the consideration of which he was early led solely by his love Of truth and reverence for Christianity, he should not reason worse than they who were contending only for their emoluments and usurpa tions. He wrote, therefore, in answer to the bishops, the tract on Prelatical Episcopacy, and in the same year, The Reason of Church Government urged against Prelacy. In the preface to the second book Of this last treatise, he discloses with a calm confidence the high opinion he held of his own powers, and gives promise of a work which his mind, in the spacious circuit of her musing, had proposed to herself, not to be raised from the heat of youth or the vapours of wine, like that which ows at waste from the pen of some vulgar amorist or the trencher fury Of a rhyming parasite, but by devout prayer to the eternal Spirit, who can enrich with all utterance and knowledge, and sends out his seraphim with the hallowed fire of his altar to touch and purify the lips Of whom he pleases. This is the prophetic announcement of Paradise Lost, from which he turned for a while his thoughts, in Obedience to God's secretary Conscience, to embark in a troubled sea Of noises and hoarse disputes. Bishop hall came out with a Defence of the Remonstrance, which was quickly succeeded by milton's Animadversions, in the form of a dialogue, and written in a lighter and more satirical vein than his previous works, though not without some passages of solemn and impressive eloquence. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poetical Works, Vol. 8 The eighth volume of this edition completes the Works of the poet. As there is no prefatory note to volume seven, the extension of the edition to nine, instead of eight volumes may now be explained. It was originally intended that the Poetical Works should be completed in seven volumes, and that the eighth should be entirely devoted to the Life of Wordsworth, and a Critical Essay; but it has been found impossible, even by omitting editorial notes and other illustrative matter - as well as the prose fragments and the indexes - to condense what remained of the poems into a single volume that did not greatly exceed the others in size. In these circumstances it seemed best to close the seventh volume with the poems belonging to the year 1834; and to add the prose fragments, two indexes, and a new chronological table of the poems to the eighth. The chronological list previously given was necessarily incomplete, important sources of information having been discovered since it was published. That which is now published may not be absolutely accurate. There is no such thing as finality in such a matter - as fresh documentary evidence may fix some dates that are uncertain, and correct others that seem reliable - but it is believed that no important error will be found in the present list. Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Poetical and Prose Works of Robert Burns: With Life, Notes, Correspondence and Glossary While the punishment of incontinence prescribed by the institutions of Scotland is severe, the culprits have an obvious method of avoiding it, afforded them by the law respecting marriage, the validity of which requires neither the ceremonies of the church, nor any other ceremonies, but simply the deliberate acknowledgement of each other as husband and wife, made by the. Parties before witnesses, or in any other way that gives legal evidence of such an acknowledgement having taken place. And as the parties themselves fix the date of their marriage, an opportunity is thus given to avoid the punishment, and repair the con sequences, of illicit gratification. Such a degree of laxity respecting so serious a con tract might produce much confusion in the descent of property without a still farther indulgence; but the law of Scotland, legi timating all children born before wedlock, on the subsequent marriage of their parents, renders the actual date of the marriage itself of little consequence. Marriages con tracted in Scotland without the ceremonies of the church, are considered as irregular, and the parties usually submit to a rebuke for their conduct, in the face of their respective congregations, which is not how ever necessary to render the marriage valid. Burns, whose marriage, it will appear, was irregular, does not seem to have undergone this part of the discipline of the church.
