Why I Write
Author: George Orwell
Publisher: Renard Press Ltd
ISBN: 1913724263
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 15
Book Description
George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Paul's Large Letters
Author: Steve Reece
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567669076
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
At the end of several of his letters the apostle Paul claims to be penning a summary and farewell greeting in his own hand: 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philemon, cf. Colossians, 2 Thessalonians. Paul's claims raise some interesting questions about his letter-writing practices. Did he write any complete letters himself, or did he always dictate to a scribe? How much did his scribes contribute to the composition of his letters? Did Paul make the effort to proofread and correct what he had dictated? What was the purpose of Paul's autographic subscriptions? What was Paul's purpose in calling attention to their autographic nature? Why did Paul write in large letters in the subscription of his letter to the Galatians? Why did he call attention to this peculiarity of his handwriting? A good source of answers to these questions can be found among the primary documents that have survived from around the time of Paul, a large number of which have been discovered over the past two centuries and in fact continue to be discovered to this day. From around the time of Paul there are extant several dozen letters from the caves and refuges in the desert of eastern Judaea (in Hebrew, Aramaic, Nabataean, Greek, and Latin), several hundred from the remains of a Roman military camp in Vindolanda in northern England (in Latin), and several thousand from the sands of Middle and Upper Egypt (in Greek, Latin, and Egyptian Demotic). Reece has examined almost all these documents, many of them unpublished and rarely read, with special attention to their handwriting styles, in order to shed some light on these technical aspects of Paul's letter-writing conventions.

ISBN: 1643009206
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 186
Book Description
The Stoneclad, an ever-present force of protection, is in danger of being consumed in darkness. To maintain its light throughout the realms, the guardians are given special gifts, elements of power that allow the light to break through. When a piece of the Stoneclad is given over to the darkness, all hope seems lost. But somewhere in the distant horizon, the Stoneclad remains true, fighting against the evil within, awaiting its true guardians . . . Secured behind the walls of her tiny village in the Shadowed Mountains, Merryn Swordwielder must choose between the life she knows and the life buried deep within her soul. As the daughter of a village tribune and head of her year, she has every chance at becoming second-in-command upon completion of her wielder elites. A part of her relishes the life she lives; yet she cannot ignore the burning inside, the distant memories singeing against her heart, forcing its way to the surface. A scavenger, Thaddeus travels from village to village foraging through the remains of char and ash, plagued by the dreams of a hidden reality and a promise he made years ago. Haunting memories of his childhood consume his thoughts as he tries desperately to cling to the goodness inside his heart. His only comfort lies in the sketches of a face-a girl he sees only in his dreams. Only when he finds a relic from his past do events unfold and secrets emerge from the ashes. The Ember Within, the first installment of The Stoneclad Chronicles, takes us on an epic adventure where we learn the amazing power of faith, the humbling reality of self, and the sacred bonds of family. Do we dare chase after that which we cannot see? Is the burning within a desire for good or for evil? Darkness or light? The burning has begun. The ember pulses within. The Stoneclad is waiting.
