Book Description
Children living in poverty have the same God-given potential as children in wealthier communities, but on average they achieve at significantly lower levels. Kids who both live in poverty and read below grade level by third grade are three times as likely not to graduate from high school as students who have never been poor. By the time children in low-income communities are in fourth grade, they're already three grade levels behind their peers in wealthier communities. More than half won't graduate from high school--and many that do graduate only perform at an eighth-grade level. Only one in ten will go on to graduate from college. These students have severely diminished opportunities for personal prosperity and professional success. It is clear that America's public schools do not provide a high quality public education for the sixteen million children growing up in poverty. Education expert Nicole Baker Fulgham explores what Christians can--and should--do to champion urgently needed reform and help improve our public schools. The book provides concrete action steps for working to ensure that all of God's children get the quality public education they deserve. It also features personal narratives from the author and other Christian public school teachers that demonstrate how the achievement gap in public education can be solved.

Book Description
The Change Rose is an emotional challenge for Christians from award-winning columnist Kim Rice Smith. If you read her popular daily blog, The Heart of Warrior, you know faith and commitment to public education drive her heart. This book is quite different than her first two The Heart of a Warrior: Faith for the Journey and The Heart of a Warrior: Faith for His Boots on the Ground. This powerful work of the heart will take you on a difficult but necessary walk through twenty years of service as a public school's board member. There are lessons learned, soul-searching questions that remain, and a call to the faith-based community to combine service with advocacy in order to strengthen the future of public education. Because Mrs. Smith served the business and faith-based communities throughout those same two decades, each section comes with discussion questions to help readers explore and challenge their own hearts and beliefs regarding the meaning of public education. Do we still believe every child deserves a free public education? Do we want more than sound and basic? The topics serve to make readers set aside what they think they know in an effort to understand the bigger picture. From start to finish, you will feel every emotion imaginable. One chapter may you leave you angry or filled with sorrow. Another chapter may leave you frustrated and wondering what can be done to make things better. Hopefully, the work in its entirety will leave you hopeful and more clearly focused on our calling as humans who care about each other regarding public education. As with all her writings, each topic begins and ends with an unexpected journey of faith. Where your heart begins on page one of "The Change Rose" is hopefully not where it ends as you finish the last chapter. Let your expected outcome be changed by adjusting the soil. Grab a group from your circle of influence and begin to dig deep into how our hearts can move forward together for #EveryChildEveryDay. Everything connects at www.kimricesmith.com.

Book Description
Throughout our nation?s history, faith communities have played an essential role in educating children. Churches, synagogues, mosques and other religious organizations have supported and extended the work of local schools by offering tutoring, reading instruction, mentoring, after-school programs and a wide range of other services. Faith communities have met the educational needs of young people with efforts that have been as generous as they have been effective. The recently passed No Child Left Behind Act?the landmark education reform law designed to close the historic achievement gaps between disadvantaged and minority students and their more advantaged peers?gives faith-based groups new opportunities to build on the good work they are already doing. No Child Left Behind resources can help faith-based groups to find new ways to help meet the learning needs of all children and to discover new ways to partner with local schools. With No Child Left Behind, schools and religious organizations can become even more powerful allies in the effort to ensure that all children?regardless of their race, family income or the language spoken in their homes?receive a high-quality education.

Book Description
Ten Commandments displays, prayer at football games, Bible in the curriculum, vouchers for tuition at religious schools, Pledge of Allegiance, wall of separation between church and state, among other hot button issues at the intersection of religion and education, generate a great deal of heat, but often light is sorely lacking. The Praeger Handbook of Religion and Education in the United States provides a unique source of light to educators, religious leaders, journalists, policy-makers, parents, and the general public as well as a useful resource for scholars interested in the impact of religion on the origins, development, and current shape of the American educational landscape. Following an introductory essay that surveys the relationship of religion to elementary and secondary education from the 1600s to the present, this set offers 175 entries written by more than 40 scholars with national reputations that cover a wide range of topics related to religion and education, both in the past and the present. These jargon-free entries are cross-referenced and provide suggestions for further reading. Readers who want to know what is behind the heat in current debates will find entries on: United States Supreme Court decisions on religion and education, current controversies regarding religion in the public schools, religious, legal, and educational associations involved in these controversies, religion and the curriculum, religious schools, individuals and movements that have affected the role of religion in education, and religion and education developments in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This one of a kind set also includes a convenient table summarizing all of the religious liberty decisions of the Supreme Court from 1815 to the present.
