Climate change is the most complex and challenging environmental problem facing the world today. Constantly increasing population growth, environmental degradation, low and erratic rainfall, rain-fed subsistence agriculture, declining land productivity and lack of appropriate technologies were found to be the major causes for their vulnerability. The studied households have been suffering from frequent and severe hazards which include drought, flooding, erratic and heavy rainfall affects the environment and their livelihood in the area are linked to persisting vulnerability. As a result, the local communities are adapting to this changing situation by changing cropping patterns, introducing crops that can mature shortly, wood and charcoal selling, wage labor, selling of assets, reforestation, saving and migration.

Climate change is considered as one of the most serious threats to natural resources, human health, people's livelihood and sustainable development. This research entitled "Vulnerability and Adaptation Strategies of Rural People to Climate Change in Mid-Hills of Nepal" was carried out in Khanchikot VDC, Arghakhanchi district of Nepal with the aim of assessing and documenting vulnerability and adaptation strategies of rural people to climate change effects. Primary data were collected from household survey (11 % of the total households), interview with key informants, and group discussion with stratified random sampling and analyzed using SPSS 11.5 and MS Excel 2007. The average annual rainfall is decreasing at the rate of 18.02 mm per year whereas average annual mean temperature is increasing at the rate of 0.07 c per year. Major climatic hazards of the study were long drought and landslide and floods. The poor people are more vulnerable to long drought ( 2 =16.69 with d.f.4 at 5% level of significance is significant) and landslide and floods ( 2 = 12.31 with d.f.4 at 5% level of significance is significant) than rich rural people."

Household vulnerability to weather shocks and changing climatic conditions has become a major concern in developing countries. Yet the empirical evidence remains limited on the impact that changing environmental conditions have on households. This book explores climate change adaptation using a social resilience approach. The book is based on primary data from the Sundarbans, a densely populated area located across parts of Bangladesh and India (West Bengal) which is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events and climate change. The focus is on assessing how households are affected by cyclones: whether they are able to cope with, adapt to and recover from events and changes; whether they are warned ahead of time; whether they benefit from government safety nets and other social programs; and finally whether they are driven to either temporary or permanent migration. Climate change poses multiple challenges to development. It affects lives and livelihoods, infrastructure and institutions, as well as beliefs, cultures and identities. There is a growing recognition that the social dimensions of vulnerability and adaptation now need to move to the forefront of development policies and practices. This book presents case studies showing that climate change is as much a problem of development as for development, with many of the risks closely linked to past, present and future development pathways.
