Book Description
Excerpt from Walsh-Suzzallo Arithmetics These books will develop all the mathematical power needed by the average person in the accurate control of his affairs. The purpose has been to teach first the most important topics of arithmetic and last those least frequently used. In consequence, the teacher may feel that the child who is leaving school at the end of any particular grade has been taught whatever would be most useful to him, considering that his schooling had to stop just then. Nothing in the next grade beyond is more important than what he has just studied. These books are so constructed as to complete the fundamental processes of arithmetic by the end of the sixth year of school life. No pupil studying from this course through the first six years will be left without an essential mathematical power. With this foundation, he can proceed by himself, as need confronts him, to learn shorter or more convenient methods of calculation and to make new applications of the processes learned. Furthermore, it may be said that in attaining a higher social utility in the arrangement of these books, nothing of teaching efficiency has been sacrificed. Every child who completes the sixth grade will know something of being accurate and business-like about his own earning, spending, and saving. He will compre hend the simplest methods of accounting which are to aid him in his own modest affairs, whether these relate to the industrial payroll, the farm income, the household expendi ture, or the savings in the bank. Book Description
Excerpt from Wheeler's Graded Arithmetics The leading courses in arithmetic for the Seventh and Eighth grades apply elementary principles to actual business problems, and they recommend that good teaching shall combine a certain amount of general information with a good working knowledge of business forms. In recent years these courses have recognized the necessity for coordinating practical arithmetic with the problems of home economics, while manual training, domestic science, and agriculture have been included as imperative essentials. Manifestly, therefore, a well-planned text designed for the last two years of the elementary schools must meet all of the older requirements, and, at the same time, provide adequate material for the broadening influences that seek to vitalize modem teaching. The authors feel that this third book of the series meets both the old and the new demands. While it is true that the methods of all business and manufacturing firms develop certain details of form that are not found in school textbooks, it is also true that these details are merely variations which extend beyond the fundamentals that the school must thoroughly teach. The keen business man does not expect young boys and girls to have a knowledge of business practice; but he has the right to expect that they shall be habitually careful, systematic, and accurate. Consequently, the textbook and the teacher must unswervingly concentrate on the development of these qualities in order to render the best service for both the pupil and the future employer. This book covers a wide range of modem arithmetical applications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Walton and Holmes's Arithmetics First Book This book is the first of a series designed to give a complete course of study in arithmetic for elementary grades beyond the second year in school. Part I is intended for a review of such ground as the pupil should have covered before beginning the use of a text-book. It takes up counting to one hundred and the combinations of numbers to twenty as a number limit. In this part of the book, oral and mental exercises predominate. Part II introduces more advanced written and oral work, and makes steady progress in measurements, denominate numbers, and simple fractions. It is designed to serve the teacher as a guide and the pupil as a text-book for the advance work in numbers to be taken in the third school year. Recent changes in thought and practice as to numbers and number teaching have been met in, what is believed to be a rational manner. Diagrams, illustrations, measurements, etc., have been liberally employed. The idea that notions of num ber and numerical Operations should be acquired from the concrete has been given full recognition. Measuring and com parison of magnitudes and values are constantly employed and are made the basis for abstract number concepts. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Arithmetic A Practical Arithmetic should deserve its name, and we have kept this in view throughout. We have asked, What appli cations of Arithmetic is the pupil likely to need in life? What are the shortest methods, and those actually used by business men? The branches of Mercantile Arithmetic have received special attention, - the making out of bills, the casting of interest, partial payments, operations in profit and loss, averaging accounts, equation of payments, due. Much collateral information on busi ness subjects has been embodied. In a word, the author has weighed every line, with the view of giving what would be most useful and best prepare the learner for the duties of the counting room. The great distinguishing feature of this book is that it is adapted to the present state of things. The last five years have been five years of financial changes; specie payments have been suspended, prices have doubled, the tariff has been altered, a national tax Rivied, &c. N o Arithmetic that ignores these changes should be placed in the hands of our youth. Time is too precious to be wasted in learning things wrong, only to unlearn them on enter ing into active life. Our examples are adapted to the present: the prices given are those of to-day; the difference between gold and currency is recognized and taught; the rates of duties agree with the present tariff; the mode of computing the national ih come taxis explained; a full description is given of the different classes of United States securities, with examples to show the comparative results of investments in them. These are matters that children, as well as adults, ought to know and understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Primary Arithmetic This little book, the first of our Series of Arithmetics, presup poses no knowledge of numbers whatever. It tries to give a cor rect idea of their value, both absolute and relative, by treating them concretely as well as abstractly from the very outset, pictorial illustrations being freely used for that purpose. We have not sought in its pages to go far, but to go thoroughly. It is therefore confined to the four fundamental operations, a very brief view of fractions, the most important tables Of moneys, weights, and meas ures, and easy exercises under them. These subjects, it is believed, are so treated, as to make the young pupil think for himself, and to lay the right kind Of foundation for a mathematical course. One thing is taught at a time, and great care has been taken to present every thing in its proper place. It will be Observed that through out the book slate exercises go hand in hand with mental Opera tions. In the author's Opinion, they are indispensable, from the first, for inspiring the beginner with that interest in the subject which is essential to success. This book imposes no labor on the teacher, in the way of ex plaining orally, furnishing examples, &c. It is thought to contain in itself all that is needed. The author would only ask those who use it to be sure that every lesson is thoroughly mastered, before proceeding to the next. Each principle presented, each table, should be perfectly understood and memorized before leaving it, even though it be necessary to repeat the lesson again and again. Time saved by allowing a Single lesson to pass unmastered, will be a tenfold loss in the end. The Roman Notation is not explained in this volume; but by means of the numerals used in the lesson-headings the pupil may readily be made to understand it.
