Book Description
Excerpt from Holbein and His Times The history of the art of the Middle Ages and of modern times demands special investigation. An outline is drawn round modern science; it is filled up by degrees as time progresses. An attempt to do this as regards art is the especial object of this work Contemporaries and posterity have eagerly occupied themselves with Albert Durer; but the records transmitted to us of Hans Holbein, the second great painter of his country, are more scanty. Up to the most recent period, his history was veiled in complete obscurity. Ulrich Hegner's work on Holbein, which appeared in 1827, corresponds with the stage at which the history of art at that time stood. It is an excellent guide to the study of the material existing in Basle, yet we must not forget that the author is neither a critical historian nor an experienced judge in artistic matters. Since Hegner s work, the master has been utterly neglected by art-investi-gators. Almost the only notice of permanent value respecting him is that contained in the works of G. F. Waagen, who never made it his special task to pursue historical investigations regarding an artist, but clearly recognized and pointed out all that was peculiar and essential in his creations. Not till late years has this state of things been altered. In England, owing to W. H. Black's archival researches, the discovery was made of the year of Holbein's death, and this was followed by the investigations of Mr. A. W. Franks and Mr. G. Scharf. Book Description
Excerpt from Hans Holbein During the next seven or eight years Holbein designed a number of book illustrations for Froben, Adam Petri, Thomas Wolfi', and other printers. He was ready, however, to turn his hand to anything. He painted a table with an amusing allegory of St. Nobody for the wedding of Hans Bar in Basle on June 24, 1515, and in the same year supplied a schoolmaster with a sign board to hang outside his house. Book Description
Excerpt from Hans Holbein: From Holbein Und Seine Zeit His altar-piece at Darmstadt - better known to the world by the excellent copy at Dresden - was painted before he was thirty years of age, yet it ranks next to the work of Raphael and there can be little doubt that had the grand picture of The Family of Sir Thomas More been pre served to this time, we should have possessed a group of portraits, which, both in composition and painting, would have been of surpassing interest and of the greatest merit. Book Description
Excerpt from The Work of Hans Holbein: Reproduced in 252 Illustrations The age in which Hans Holbein lived and worked was the age of what has been called The New Learning. It was an age of practical achievements, of adventures, of undertakings for the pur pose of material gains. It was the age of conquest and colonization for worldly benefits, an age the logical outcome of the Renaissance. Prior to this age people were moved by faith in the invisible and unknowable; the imagination played the principal part in human hopes and aspirations. But with the discovery of the New World and the achievements of the Reformation a new Spirit possessed men. They saw that the world was rich in the means for making life pleasant and desirable. All that was necessary was to dig and delve and shape What was there to hand; or, to go out and adventure for the prizes that were there to Win. The spirit of this age was thus a realizing spirit, and it is this realizing spirit that Holbein pos sessed and evinced in his works.
