Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Staten Island Cricket and Tennis Club, 1872-1917, Livingston, Staten Island In those days there were but few Cricket or Amateur Baseball Clubs in the neighborhood. Golf was almost unknown among the people at large, and the gen eral interest in athletics, that has since grown to such great proportions, was in its infancy in this country. This Club, therefore, would seem to be one of the few or ganizations still in active existence, that was among the pioneers in that really great movement - the introduction of Amateur sports a movement that has meant so much to the men of this country and to their posterity, and has made, we think, for the betterment of the nation, both in body and soul. Book Description
Excerpt from Days Afield on Staten Island Thus with some of the members of that collecting and tramping fraternity, of which the Island possesses a goodly number, I went afield, but more often I rambled alone. Nature seems to speak more directly to a lone rambler, and to a number of persons in company she rarely says a word. Two, at most, can tread evenly the same path. Can be touched by the same sense, and echo to each other with pleasant minor changes, the influences of the way. In character these pages are miscellaneous as were the excursions they commemorate, and they might have been much extended, but perhaps a small potion of an untried compound will be preferred by the reader. It is the fashion to condemn, and I do not expect the majority to be at variance with that mood, but perhaps to some loiterer by the hedge-rows, I may speak sincerely, and he will prize the result of my humble effort to write something of nature and old Staten Island. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Richmond County (Staten Island) New York: From Its Discovery to the Present Time The preparation of a history like this invo'lves the employ ment of a great variety of means, drawing from a multitude of sources. The compiler is frequently obliged to accept the statements of others without knowing upon what data those statements are made. The utter impossibility of any one man being able, during the brief term of one human life, to go to the bottom of every fact stated in a work of this kind must be too apparent to need -explanation. There are a. Hundred ways by which errors may creep in. The editor can but use his best judgment as to the reliability of the authorities upon which he depends for statements, and his constant and most careful vigilance in guarding against erroneous statements. This he has done in the preparation of this work, and that vigilance has been rendered more effective by the experience the editor has had heretofore in the preparation of similar works in other fields.
