Book Description
Excerpt from History of the State of Delaware, Vol. 2 of 3 Alexander Porter was proprietor for one year. Collins Denney succeeded him and remained until 1836, and Captain Henry Reed, who died there in 1837, had been the proprietor for a little more than a year prior to his death. Next in order came Jesse Sharpe, and while he was in charge the building was sold, and in 1842 it was discontinued for hotel purposes and became a drygoods store. Afterwards the same name, Indian King, was given to another hotel which stood for years on Market street above Front, occupying the site of the present A. J. Hart Company's wholesale grocery house, and known as No. 109. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Delaware, Vol. 1 of 2: 1609-1888 While it is remarkable that so important and interesting a field of historical investigation should have been neglected in these latter days of keen and deep research into the individu alities, the environment, the motives, the labors and the rewards of the people who laid the foundations and erected the superstructures of the American commonwealths, it may be accepted that in the case of Delaware, the difficulties of a complete and creditable work seemed even more insurmountable, than the temptation to enter this almost unexplored domain was attractive. To undertake an exhaustive inquiry and carry it to successful completion has been a task that enlisted patient determination, thorough sympathy with the subject, minute scrutiny and that liberal enterprise which the publishers have generously furnished. Now, after many months of toil, in which the lore of Delaware, the fragmentary records lefi by its pioneers, the stages of its progress and the collections of European and American writers bearing upon its establishment and growth, have been compelled to yield their secret or open treasures, this history is put forth with full confidence that no means have been unem ployed to secure its accuracy and completeness in detail or as a whole. Excerpt from Delaware or the Ruined Family; A Tale, Vol. 1 of 3 Not many years ago, as the writer of this work was returning on horseback to Castellamare, from a visit to the Lactarian Hills, he overtook, just under the chestnut trees on the slope, which every one who has visited that part of Italy must remember, two gentlemen with their guide, who were on their way home after some expedition of a kind similar to his own.
