Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Popes, Vol. 3: Their Church and State Polo Capello promises to treat on four subjects: the cardinals, the relations or dispositions of the pope towards the king of France and towards Venice respectively; the intentions (el desiderio) Of his holiness, and what they might expect from him; but as this division of his subject was not founded on any very accurate distinctions, he does not rigidly adhere to it. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Popes, Vol. 3: From the Close of the Middle Ages; Drawn From the Secret Archives of the Vatican and Other Original Sources The favourable reception accorded to the English Version of Volume I. of Professor Ludwig Pastor's "History of the Popes," issued in 1891, has given encouragement for a continuance of the publication of the Work. The Second Volume, like the preceding one, in its English form has been divided into Two Volumes (Vols. III. and IV.). They comprise the Pontificates of Pius II., Paul II., and Sixtus IV. (a.d. 1458-1484). The Editor's share in the work has been confined to the supervision of the translation, the aim of which has been to follow the Text as closely as possible. The Notes, which contain most valuable matter, have been published in extenso, as also the Appendix of Unpublished Documents, the latter being indicated by a star. The original spelling, which may sometimes appear strange to modern eyes, has been rendered verbatim. The Editor begs to express his best thanks to the friends who have prepared the translation, and compiled the Table of Contents and Index. Book Description
The office of bishop of Rome, is one of the most powerful positions in the world. As an ancient institution stretching back for centuries, the papacy has a history that is marked by archaic and modern customs alike. The history of the men who have held this position is fraught with villainous and heroic actions that have left a profound impact on the development of civilization as we know it, both in the West and East. The popes led the early Church through persecution, acquired temporal power through the actions of Constantine, oversaw the universal Church in the early middle ages, were steeped in various scandals in the late middle ages, saw their secular power stripped in the modern period, and were instrumental in the rise and fall of various kingdoms and nations.
