DEGREESg DEGREESHERE is still preserved, amongst the county papers of Orkney, an original letter by Sir David Dalrymple, Lord Advocate, addressed to Lord Morton, dated 26th Dec 1719, in which he states " That it is His Majesty's Pleasure that you do forthwith give Direction within the bounds of The Sheriffdoms of Orknay and Zetland for putting of the said Laws in Execution against all the Non-juring-clergy within your Jurisdiction; whether they be of the Establish'd Church, Expectants of Divinity, or Ministers, or of the Episcopal Persuasion, Ministers in churches or holding Meeting Houses." In pursuance of this letter, the moderators of the presbyteries of Orkney were addressed. They at first declined to take the Oaths, but afterwards did so, their signatures to them being still preserved.* In this correspondence no mention is made of any Episcopal clergy by name. * Originals in Sheriff-Clerk's Office.
