If he has failed in doing this, he trusts it may be attributed, rather to his inability to overcome that prejudice which has been termed 'the besetting sin' of the par tizan, than to any other, or more censurable motive. It was long since laid down, as an unvarying max im, that 'the logic of a politician, like the anvil of the blacksmith, leans all upon the one side'; and the writer of these pages will not claim, at this day, to be entirely exempt from the failings which are incident to mortality.
