Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Baptists in North Carolina Our purpose in producing the following pages is to put in readable form the deeds of our Baptist fathers in the Old North State. To write the history of the North Carolina Baptists is to tread on virgin soil. The task has never been undertaken before, so far as the author knows. Consequently, we do not claim perfection in details of Baptist history in North Carolina. The records were only partially kept in the early days, so that much of the real history of North Carolina Baptists has never been committed to paper. Taking into consideration the lack of information in some places and superabundance of it in others, we have tried to make a connected history, dealing with all characters and events with an impartial pen. Many heroes have not a place in this narrative, ' because scarcely anything-has been preserved from their lives of heroism. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina Relating to another statement in the Convention of 1850 is the following' The churches of the State are urged to establish schools for the oral instruction of the colored people. In some instances the colored people were allowed to hold services conducted by some member of their own race in some sections and at specified times, but such meetings were usually held under the supervision of a white man, and at his discretion these meetings were brought to a close. In very many instances such meetings were even con ducted by a member of the white race. In matters of discipline, especially if a white member was involved, the colored people had no voice whatever. In matters affecting their own number often some colored brother in whom the church had confidence would make re ports and recommendations. In compliance with the resolution of 1837, which we have already mentioned, in some instances provision was made in the erection of the church edifice by petition, and in the galleries for the accommodation of the colored brethren. In the communion services, after the bread andlwine had been passed to the white brethren, it was passed in turn to the colored brethren. This was regarded by them as a God-sent privilege and a blessing, for which their Amens were often loud and lasting. Book Description
Excerpt from North Carolina Baptist Historical Papers, Vol. 3: January, 1899, to January, 1900 On the other hand, Joshua Lawrence was a d e structive. He lived in a wonderful time an age on ages telling, but he lacked the gift of insight, and so he spent his life in a vain fight against all the great movements which were gathering momentum and changing the conditions of humanity. One will be conscious as he reads his writings that they were the productions of a vigorous intellect which had been deprived of training in early life and had not been. Enlarged by subsequent reading and study. He had no large acquaintance with men, for his life had been spent within the limits of the Kehukee Association, mainly within the borders of Edgecombe, County. He had a prodigious memory and great familiarity with the Bible; an active imagination and strong sensibili ties. I - Ie was a son of the soil, one of the people: and he was always sincere and thoroughly in earnest. He was fearless also and always sure that his plans were right. Such a man is a formidable antagonist, and weak or timid men follow his lead blindly. He died January, 1843.
