Excerpt from A Memorial of Ella Campbell Ewing During commencement week at Eureka College in June, 1907, a group of the class of 1905, after a class dinner, was discussing the changes the two years of separation had brought. Uppermost in the minds of all was the loss which had come through the death of Ella Ewing after a service of three months in a mission station at Bolenge, Africa. This was a personal loss to all of these members of the class, for in her each had a friend. What could they do to show their appreciation of her life? One thing there suggested was the writing of a little volume that should tell her life story simply - just as it had been lived. It was believed that this might be an inspiration to young men and women who should read it for nobler, more consecrated living wherever their lives were cast. Perhaps in this way the influence of her life might be increased. It is with this desire that the book has been prepared. It has been hard not to eulogize when the subject has been so tempting, but the effort has been to tell the story truly and simply. Excerpt from Speech of Mr. Ewing, of Ohio, on Mr. Bradbury's Resolutions The Senate having resumed the consideration of the resolution in relation to removals from office - Mr. Ewing said: I expressed my entire willingness on Thursday last, after listening to the remarks of the Senator from Indiana, (Mr. Bright, ) to join the issue tendered by gentlemen on the other side. And as it is impossible to adduce all the cases of removal, and to give all the reasons in all the cases, I was willing to take the two prominent cases selected by those gentlemen, and selected with very great care and caution, and to let them stand as the test cases. On my part, in behalf of the late Administration, I was willing, and am still willing, to admit, that if these removals, or if either one of them, was wrong, that all were wrong; and I expect a like candid admission on their side, that if those which they have selected as the test cases were right, that all were right; and that they will give up the contest, if the position which they have taken as to these their selected cases cannot be sustained. Gentlemen made their selection after the lapse of much time, and evidently upon much consultation. I infer the fact from their obvious accord in thrusting Gen. Lane and Col. Weller prominently forward as the specially wronged and persecuted victims; from the prompt and general rally at the instant to their defence; from the harmonious agreement of many voices in denouncing these especially as cases of mere naked proscription; and, finally, from the general concurrence of Senators in alleging, by way of aggravation, that the gentlemen thus removed were at the time on the Pacific coast. I do not know that this was the result of a caucus, but there was a wondrous agreement in the assumption of fact and its presentation in argument. By mutual agreement, then, we will take these cases, chosen by gentlemen on the other side. We will take them with all their circumstances of aggravation, and if I cannot prove that their removals were right and proper, nay, a necessary duty on the part of the late President, then I will agree that he acted upon a wrong principle, and that his removals generally were wrong. If I prove that these were right, then I claim from the other side the admission that his removals were generally right. Excerpt from Diary of Thomas Ewing: August and September, 1841 Not all parts of the manuscript printed below are of the same date. The firs-t three paragraphs Were prefixed to the diary proper. The grandson of Secretary Ewing states however that, judging from the handwriting, they are of about the same date. The next three paragraphs. Are in his handwriting of much later date. The essential portion, beginning with the words On the morning of the 16th August, are plainly contemporary. The last paragraph under September I is shown by the handwriting to be a later insertion. Such is also the character of the final three paragraphs. A full discussion of the whole crisis from the point of view of the President may be found in Dr. Lyon G. Thomas Ewing (1789 - 1871) was graduated from the Ohio Uni versity in 1815, practised law for several years at Lancaster, Ohio, was a Whig senator from that state 1831 - 1837, secretary of the treasury March 5 - September 13, 1841, secretary of the interior 1849 - 1850, senator again 1850 - 1851, and in 1861 a delegate to the Peace Conference, of which Ex - President Tyler was president. He then tells how Tom came to national prominence in the fight over the proslavery Lecompton Constitution, was instrumental in starting up the Union Pacific Railroad, and became the first chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court.
