Book Description
Excerpt from Civics of Pennsylvania Civil government has been looked upon generally as the science of national activity. Not only has the state as a governing authority received little attention, but its rela tion to the nation has been viewed in a distorted perspec tive. Naturally the student has come to look on state sovereignty and national supremacy as wholly external to himself, and apart from each other, instead of consonant elements in a great system. An examination of the powers exercised and the duties rendered by those local organs with which he is more or less acquainted by actual contact will enable him toplace both sovereignties in their proper positions with reference to each other. While this brief exposition of the government of Pennsylvania has been prepared to serve as a supplement for those who are already familiar with the important elements of civics, its further purpose is to aid the student to understand the. Excerpt from History and Government of Pennsylvania: A Supplement to Elementary American History and Government All the tribes were divided into clans each of which had a sachem who was the chief authority. The sachems decided questions concerning peace and war and other matters which affected the tribe as a whole. When the tribe went to war, the authority over the warriors was given to the chiefs who gathered around them enough warriors to undertake an expedition. The Dutch. Interested by the explorations of Henry Hudson, the Dutch sent an expedition to America in 1613 for the purpose of establishing posts for trading with the Indians. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Proprietary Government in Pennsylvania, Vol. 6 The English colonial governments were of three varieties first, provincial establishments, the constitutions of which were outlined in the commissions and instructions given by the crown to the governors, and the assemblies of which, held under royal authority, had their share in making ordinances which were local in character and not repugnant to the laws of Eng land; secondly, charter governments, which were in origin and nature civil corporations; thirdly, proprietary governments, which were essentially feudal principalities, upon the grantees of which were bestowed all the inferior regalities and sub ordinate powers of legislation which formerly belonged to the counts palatine, while provision was also made for the main tenance of Sovereignty in the king, and for the realization of the objects of the grant. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Citizen in Pennsylvania: The Government of the State and of the Nation The purpose of this work is to present to the pupils in the public schools in the Commonwealth some practical infor mation as to the rights and duties which belong to American citizenship. The study of civics is {now receiving increased attention in our schools, particularly since the school laws require that teachers shall have a fair knowledge of civil government, including State and local government. In view of this legislation, a text - book to meet the needs of the schools should treat the local and State government as at least of equal importance with that of the Nation. It has been said that many a youth has grown to manhood with so little ap preciation of the Commonwealth in which he lives as to re gard it simply as a geographical division. The study of the State government and of the National Government are of equal importance. The student of civil government should begin with that which is near at hand and of immediate interest, and proceed to that which is distant and of remote concern. He should not begin with that rare and precious afterthought and flower of government, the Constitution of the United States, but with the material forms that are close at hand. In connection with the ordinary lessons in reading, the children should be made acquainted with words suggesting civic ideas, as cit izen, soldier, officer, law, justice, country, state, city, and nation. Then, in elementary lessons, the children should gain general notions of local government and organization. Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of the People of the State of Pennsylvania A State or Commonwealth is. A public corporation, and has many rights also possessed by a free person. It can buy and sell property and hold it in possession. It can make contracts or agreements and compel those who form the contract to perform their part. Yet because it is the State and possesses many powers which a human being cannot possess or exercise, the State cannot be sued as easily as an individual or a private corporation. The State as a public corporation is next in rank to the United States. Public corporations of lesser rank are counties, cities, and boroughs. There are cases in which the United States, a State, a county, a city, or a borough may be sued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
