The sachems decided questions concerning peace and war and other matters which affected the tribe as a whole. When the tribe went to war, the authority over the warriors was given to the chiefs who gathered around them enough warriors to undertake an expedition. The Dutch. Interested by the explorations of Henry Hudson, the Dutch sent an expedition to America in 1613 for the purpose of establishing posts for trading with the Indians. The study of civics is {now receiving increased attention in our schools, particularly since the school laws require that teachers shall have a fair knowledge of civil government, including State and local government. It has been said that many a youth has grown to manhood with so little ap preciation of the Commonwealth in which he lives as to re gard it simply as a geographical division.
